How was the flooring attached? Nailed it is possible but you will lose the T&G. Nailed and glued, probably not easy at all.

All new flooring, are you kidding? This is a kitchen, dining, living room area all with this flooring. Why on earth would I need all new flooriing because we're getting new cabinets and adjusting the position of the arm-island that sticks out?

If you have extra flooring from your original job, or can salvage it from when you move the island, you may be able to achieve a reasonable patch/repair. If you don't have extra flooring, you may be able to find something similar (probably unfinished, and then you'll have to finish it yourself) to use as a repair.

Depending on where this is, you may wind up with a highly visible repair. Only you can decide if that will drive you crazy or not.

Which is why LWO is questioning the decision to move the island....

The good thing is this! Our hickory floors are wild with colors and sizes, thin and thick, light and darker. A patch job will blend right in with all the variation. I'm pretty certain we don't have left overs but I'm also pretty certain we can find a match. Hopefully it won't be too big an issue!

If you buy matching flooring using your original receipt, I'd take the opportunity to buy some extra. I recently put maple floors in and I have 75 sq ft stashed away in the basement just in case. Couple hundred bucks now could save you tens of thousands in the future.

You can get nailed hardwood up in-tact but it is a slow job. You need to get your first few pieces up by just prying and probably destroying them, and then use either an oscillating tool with an expensive blade made to cut nails attached, or you can get a long thin metal cutting blade on a sawz-all that will slide under the wood and cut the nails. If the wood is so tight to the floor you can't get either blade under it you can pry carefully. If they used the newer finish head screw fasteners in a gun you are probably screwed(lol) as those things keep the floor just absolutely pressed tight. You'll never get a saw blade under there or pry them up in-tact if that is the case.

Well crud. I contacted Homer wood and they said they never sold strips in the width the receipt says. I mentioned it was 10 years ago but they said it wasn't them. So odd. The receipt say HOM COTT NAT and the width. I don't know another manufacturer that sounds like HOM except homer wood.

It seems a bit unlikely that you'll be able to remove planks from one spot and patch another. Your best bet is to find a similar product and adapt it. Multi width planks come and go so you will probably need to find something wider and rip it down to the widths required. There's really no need to remove the existing area either as the island can sit on top of it to provide the proper counter height.

FYI, I've seen quite a few wood floors with the word HOME in the brand name and you must also consider that some dealers use private labeling to obscure the brand to curb having people shop around.

I guess they'll have to add floor shims, LOL. All of our hardwood floors are after-thoughts so any new cabinets are coming in to subfloor.

The height from the floor top to the counter top is generally about 36". That standard will determine whether your island can go on top of the floor or set on the subfloor.

10 year old wood will never match new wood, even if it’s “the same”. Wood changes color as it ages and is exposed to light. Matching something like that is never possible. If it is a solid, more solid from another source can be sourced, and the entire floor can be sanded and refinished. Or, the entire floors can be replaced with a different choice. Or the mismatch can be accepted as the evolved over time look that older homes with history achieve.

Definitely not replacing all of the floors, the entire downstairs would have to be done and not doing that. It is a little mountain house with all of its rough charm I am happy with a little bit of mismatch. We'll just demo the existing cabs, add a 3/4" subfloor, and work with the exposed patch once the island arm is moved. If it isn't Homerwood, I'll have to do my research then!
