Wild flower ID please? May be Orchid
Comments (5)Annette, you are a fountain of knowledge! I think that it is the Platanthera hookeri (Rein Orchid) -- it fits with the dry area that I found the plants in and the leaves certainly look the same. I hope I can get back to Musgrave Landing in a week or two and find it in bloom. Interestingly, I have found Rattlesnake Orchids and ladyslipper orchids here, and it is supposed to have some Phantom Orchids. I keep looking for the latter but so far no joy. It is listed as one of very few places in BC where they may be found. It is an area of just a few hundred square feet, but is a little rock peninsular that is spectacularly beautiful! Comments (3)It looks like Conoclinium coelestinum and it is native to Tennesee and most of the East of the country from Texas and Nebraska to the Atlantic. GREAT butterfly attracter. It is a bit of a thug in the garden so give it ROOM to expand if you are planting it otherwise you will grow to not like it. It is not a good plant for a small garden. Comments (2)I found the name: Pearcea hypocyrtiflora Here's a link with more pictures: http://www.gesneriads.ca/pearcea.htm This diminutive rhizomatous plant has very attractive and colorful foliage, as well as unusual brilliantly red flowers. The lobes of the flowers do not open except under optimum conditions. The flowers are probably hummingbird pollinated. They grow in colonies in tropical rain forests.
