columbus ohio plant swap/potluck sept 17, 2006 fall 2nd
Comments (109)Hi Beverly, To answer your Q?, I did go to Darby Creek Nursery,me and my friends went there after the swap. But they didn't have a good sale like they did last fall.We left there almost empty handed. But we had stopped at Shroders off of 71 on our way to the swap and before we got to the swap. They have some really good sales on their plants. That's where we bought most of our plants that day. On our way home we stopped at Seely's. I ended up buying 4 Hostas and Jacquie and her sister Bobbi bought 4 or 5. And we were loaded for bear.LOL I was in so much pain I couldn't hardly stand it. But It was fun.I couldn't unload my car and lucky for me I have some very able friends who don't mind helping or doing for me.Oh!! If I only Had My Legs Back!!! What's this Beverly about you having a Hosta Sale on the 30th? Did you sell them for a business or are they your own??Diane had emailed me with the info and date, But I didn't get the message till after the day of your sale. Sorry I missed it. Hope you did a good business!!! Hope you and Betty had fun at the swap.Fill us in on the Goodies you brought home!! Keep in touch!! Comments (29)Here are a couple of other options. In both, I switched the sectional around like Malhgold suggested. I wanted to point out a few of things common to both options. First off, I switched the DW to the other side so (1) you would have more room for a lazy susan (the left side is shorter than the right) and (2) the DW no longer is in conflict w/the range. Blind Corners vs Lazy Susans: You no longer have any "blind corner" cabinets...they have all been changed to Lazy Susans. Note: I shortened the wall next to the refrigerator by 3". If you don't shorten it, as others have noted, you will need to either pull the refrigerator out from the wall by 3" or put in a 3" filler b/w the refrigerator and wall so you can open the refrigerator fully...based on the refrigerator doors you have drawn. If you have a single door w/a left hinge, then you probably won't need to do either of the above. BUT, if you do that then the door will open in such a way that you cannot utilze the only landing space you have for the refrigerator (left/north of the refrigerator). I also suggest that you take that wall down completely, you'll gain over 5" of cabinet space if you do. MW & Vent: I took out the OTR MW and put in a vent hood. I did that b/c OTR MWs are not ideal as either a vent or as a working MW. A better choice is a hood at least 6" wider than the range and a MW mounted at a lower work height. [Option #1 shows a sculpted SS hood, Option #2 shows a decorative wood hood. Two looks for you to consider.] Unless you are very tall (>6'6"), trying to get things in and out of a MW over a hot range or oven is, at best, inconvenient and, at worst, dangerous....reaching over the hot range trying to look at what's cooking and trying to stir, etc. Then you have to take the dish out and try not to spill anything--even though you really can't see that high. Hence, a 36" vent hood + regular MW. The MW is still on that wall, though. Normally, I like to put the MW near the refrigerator, but in your case there isn't enough wall space on the refrigerator wall w/o making it look cramped. Left & Far left walls: I extended the cabinetry around the left corner to give you more work and "wall" space on the left wall and allow you to utilize all the wall space on that side of the kitchen. Additionally, there is now an 18" utility cabinet + 30" pantry cabinet. Since there doesn't appear to be any other pantry storage, I thought a larger pantry would be more useful. This is also the wall w/the prep sink. It's on the corner to be accessible from the kitchen, island, and FR. Since your kitchen is so long, especially with the addition of the island, I thought it would be very useful to have an additional sink available not just for prepping, but for anyone coming into the kitchen who might be trolling for a snack or beverage. BTW...The refrigerator is on the edge of the work area so it's easily accessible from both the kitchen and the FR, and the FR access doesn't interfere with the kitchen. Prep Areas: You now have three prep areas, two of which are a very good size, plus the island. The prep areas are b/w the refrigerator & sink, b/w the sink & range, and b/w the range & pantry. The last one includes the prep sink. Island: 24" Beverage Center plus other base cabinet(s) in the island Seating for 4 Work Flows: From garage/outside (??) to...pantry or refrigerator From refrigerator to...sink to...range or MW to DR or island or cleanup/main sink From pantry to...prep sink to...range or MW to DR or island or cleanup/main sink From DR or island to...cleanup/main sink Oh, BTW...I drew the sectional too long, it's 8' rather than the 7' 6" you mentioned...so that means w/6" b/w the back wall & the sectional, there will be 48" b/w the sectional and the patio door....much better clearance! You were wondering about the size of the sectional in the FR...IMHO, I think the sectional will dominate the room. I would consider instead a sofa and a couple of chairs....but, that's up to you. And now, the unique items to each option......... Option #1: In this option, the MW is north of the range. This location while good for kitchen use, may cause some kitchen interference from snackers since it's in the heart of the work area. If your faucet has a long enough hose, you can fill pots on the range from the prep sink! The sink is still 36", not quite centered under the window. There is a 9" cabinet to the left of the sink. Unfortunately, I don't think there are any 9" trash pullouts. But, you could take space from one of the side cabinets for a trash pullout if you want one. The island is 6' 3" x 3' 8" with seating for 4, a 24" beverage chiller, and an 18" cabinet. There is a 3 foot clearance b/w the south wall & the island and 39" b/w the sectional & the island. It should be enough, I think. Also, viewing the FR TV from the island isn't too bad. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Option #2: In this option I changed several things. Like Saskatchewan_girl's layout, the sink base is now 30". While it's a smaller sink, it allows you to center the sink under the window and, more importantly in my opinion, you have room for a trash pullout...possibly even a double...to the left of the sink in a 15" cabinet (what a difference 6" makes!) The MW is now south (left) of the range. This moves the range north somewhat, but there's still plenty of prep space as well as enough distance from the main/cleanup sink. The MW in this position does allow it to be used by snackers w/o interfering w/the kitchen work but, I'm not sure I like the wall cabinets as well. It does, however, give you an additional prep space! You now have four prep spaces + the island...I don't know if you need that many, but it's nice to have them! The prep spaces are now b/w the refrigerator & main sink, b/w the main sink & range, b/w the range & prep sink, and to the left of the prep sink. The island....this one is 4' 2" x 8' 6".....very large...maybe too large! It does, however, give you a great expanse of space for projects and other large-scale needs, it also has the Beverage chiller plus 2 or 3 additional cabinets. There is almost 5' of seating area on both sides. Since it's against the back wall, I thought it might be a good idea to have a little more than the 48" you would normally have for 2 seats. If you have many small children visiting, you could probably fit 3 on each side....party time! Oh, do you have children or grandchildren? I just realized that we don't know much about your family as far as needs are concerned....no children/grown, small children, tweens/teens, etc. HTH!...See MoreAre Aristokraft cabinets a mistake?
Comments (56)So to close my chapter with aristokraft cabinets. After a lot of persistence, I did get a representative to address my problem. He came with my contractor and the sales representative to my house to see my complaint. This was back about when I first posted my question. Looking back I don’t think the sales representative/designer knew his product. The stain finish the sales representative showed me was different from what I received. An even, solid stain sample door was presented but the finished cabinets installed were uneven in color almost seeing an airbrush technique. Not too bad,but not what I really wanted or expecting. Then some doors didn’t match in color. Some seemed to have more dense color than others. Again uneven color texture. Finally some doors warped. Not due to poor care or neglect. My lazy Susan wasn’t installed properly ( not a straight right angle). This couldn’t be remedied. I live with it. Some doors were replaced so they now match each other. The representative addressed some problems but not all. My lesson learned is to do your homework. Try to shop, shop, shop for quality. Consider different products and Ask a-lot of questions. Costs, upgrades and If you have a tight budget this is even more important. Good luck people, but I still wouldn’t recommend Aristokraft cabinets....See MoreNeed to Order Cabinets/ Layout Feedback Requested (Picture Heavy)
Comments (21)All -- thank you so much! If I could send you virtual Gift Cards to the restaurant of your choice, I'd send at least a $100 for a decent meal and couple of drinks :) (Sigh, I know I'm too cheap, been in New England for too long.... ok fine, make that $200 for a really nice meal). Your feedback was hugely appreciated and ever so timely. I took today off work and worked on the plan (said differently, wasted the WHOLE day), and have submitted it to the cabinet shop/company I am working with. Once I have their plans, I will post. Changes today -- aisle widths have been a concern to me. I reworked my island layout (see below), which includes current widths. I also trotted up to the attic and measured my faithful old round table and chairs (to be used in b'fast area, and before you ask -- I like the table, it has a lot of family history, and hopefully will refinish it :) ). Based on how we would sit in the old kitchen, and how we will sit in the new, we sit facing out the window. We have a nice, long sloping lawn (before, used to look at birds a few feet away at bird feeders, we will miss that). I have always love the idea of a command center--i.e., you're prepping away in front of your guests, so this does appeal very much to me. From Drop Box While not optimal between desk and island, I believe it's something we can live with. Marcolo -- Thanks so much for chiming in, I hoped you would! Long hike to pantry -- good point. Will consider other locations for this. Fridge clearance - point take. (Half day spent on reviewing panel fridges) Fridge swapped. Drawers - I take your point re 1 shallow, 2 deep. However, one of my goals for the new kitchen is organization - I love idea of home for creme caramel cups, for example -- why I liked the idea of more, shallow. Remembering that you can compartmentalize a larger space... will take longer to sink in. Cabinet over fridge to be pulled forward, definitely. Angled corner cabinet -- another point taken. Wait for drawings from cabinet co. In the meantime, please ignore ugly jog in countertop (s/w not cooperating). Enough storage for flatware/dish/glass -- definitely unsure about this. I think I measured loosely and thought I'd be fine - but right now, in temporary kitchen, I'm storing things on top of chairrails, so... have lost track. I've added a cabinet to the left, and both are configured for a 4" drawer, and then two ~8 " drawers. Yes to the MW drawer. Brianadarnell - good questions/comments, all. THANKS! Straight upper cabinet wall, check:) Swapped fridge and went the (virtual) pricey route of the built in Liebherr. Regarding beverage fridge -- DH has asked for only 1 thing in the remodel; a beverage fridge in the island for his -um- malt beverages. Unfortunately, hampered by the requirement to provide seating on the island for our two kids and three neighbor friends, I lose out on being able to place essential items such as warming drawers, and unfortunately, even more important items such as - um - redundant malt cooling storage facilities. To accommodate DH, I am placing the overflow malt beverage storage unit as close as possible to his work zone (read GARAGE/OUTSIDE). As this unit may need to contain beverages of a non-malt nature (read - wine), rest assured that this unit is capable of cooling appropriately. Also, there is also primary location of fridge, for 'overflow' storage. The pantry/laundry room will be open to the kitchen (no doors); there will be sorting drawers for the laundry (scroll up to see picture); when laundry is brought in and dumped on floor / countertops, it should be sorted right away. (Currently, we open the door to the basement, and toss down.... rather nice!). The range wall is an outer wall, the garage (to the right of the kitchen). This is the room through which we will normally enter and exit. There will be a mudroom, with coat storage and storage space for the hockey bags :) -- beyond that is the 'fire room'; we're in New England and keep a fire going here in the wood burning stove for most of the winter (Oct - April; it's a long period). Large storage for big pots and pans - hopefully, most of these will go below 48" cooktop; current plan is 4 drawers; 2 on top, 2 below. Hi Houseful -- as always, thanks for your input. You're right about the M/W, have moved to the right of the ovens. The plan is for pull-out laundry bins (to the left of the washing machine); laundry is dumped on the floor or C/T and then sorted into 1 of 4 bins (whites, colors, darks, delicates). So, hopefully, laundry won't ever sit out. Rachel -- Wall is gone, LOVE the idea of symmetry/tiling right side. Thanks! bmorepanic -- you get the Platinum Gift Card; please select the meal/venue/virtual Gift Card of your choice! I spent the day reviewing your aisle notes/recommendations; they were so very helpful. While not perfect, my plans have been improved due to your input. Good catch on the angled wall in the pantry; another casualty of the original plan vs. reality.... I've adjusted the island towards the stove per your 36" suggestion. Your advice re. larger cabinet size is appreciated and will be reviewed carefully. My only comment is that if you have tons of space in a new kitchen (egad, you should see my former (combined) baking station/coffee station/dish cleaning/prep area/library,etc. -- all crammed above a 24" cabinet) - then there might truly be a place for everything.... On my plan, when 'pullouts' are designated, I plan a handle which can be tugged to pull out the cabinet (vs. open cabinet, then pull out). I'm obviously not calling this the right thing. Thanks, I do very much agree that the double motion should be avoided. Good points on the opening issues. Double ovens will receive 1" filler to the left. Would appreciate any feedback on items in final drawings which don't seem to be paying attention to this. You have a knack for really understanding a picture. Thank you for the comment regarding pulling out the hood as well. This, I hadn't yet considered. Designov - would like to see your layout; hope you are able to post. Fridge wall removed (I'm pretty sure it is not load bearing; DH dbl checking). I don't think I have room to put DW to the left of clean-up sink; will keep in mind. We are getting cabinets from Conestoga. They offer an RTA cabinet and GORGEOUS doors. Onus definitely on you to make sure quote is accurate. I have received quotes from Lowes/Kraftmaid cabinets (6 visits over past 2 years), as well as Omega/Dynasty and alternate Kraftmaid dealer. I really love the door styles available and feel if you put in the work, you can get a terrific product at a lower price than the big box stores. Computerklutz - would love to see your kitchen/progress as well, please do post pictures once your counter tops are in. (Fingers crossed between now and then that all goes well!). After reading your post and others, I spent a good deal of time reviewing fridge's. Thank you for the heads up. Also -- regarding the microwave -- did you put in a MW drawer at a lower level or a regular MW? From what I've read, people seem to like the MW drawer... but since I have an unopened MW drawer in the basement, I would very much appreciate your feedback! Best regards to DH....See MoreMel W
