Hosta Identification help #4

Here's another NOID Hosta that I'm wondering if anyone can identify. A friend just split it 2 weeks ago and gave me this piece. It was in the sun all summer, and as you can tell by the leaves it was badly burned. My friend moved her plant to a shadier spot, and I have planted my piece in a shady spot as well.

The leaves are very shiny, even now after being scorched all summer. Sorry, I didn't take a pic with something for scale. If that will help, let me know, and I'll get another pic.

Here’s my Queen Josephine this week. I grow it in part to full sun in zone 7b.

Queen Josephine is a possibility. A pic of your friends plant before it was divided would have been really helpful.

I too immediately thought Queen Josephine. Scale wouldn't matter much with a new division. However if you could estimate the size of you friends plant, that would help.

based on the nice hack tree next to it [love that bark] ..... i know whose butt the seed shot out of .. lol ... and i would bet on the seedy wild bramble varieties ... blackberry or rasp ... if you want some nice black or raspberries.... buy some good varieties .. and plant then in sun ... the ones the birds drop are usually very small berries.. with huge seeds ... both in size and amount ... all that said.. looking at the area in general ... if all your looking at is a natural area ... leave it there ... just dont bother moving it to prime space ... not many 'free' plants.. end up valuable ... ken

I dug the diseased Sun Power out this morning. Used a shovel I don't normally use for gardening, and will disinfect it with a couple of my Lysol wipes, just to be safe. I also used disposable gloves instead of my normal gardening gloves. I stuck the plant in a plastic bag, and will throw it out next garbage day. I tried to get as many of the roots as I could distinguish from tree and lilac roots. I planted a non-hosta plant in the spot, to remember where it was, so I don't put another hosta there anytime soon. Thanks again for replying to my post, and letting me know about the HVX. I was saddened to lose it, but glad I found out now, while it was still easy to remove, than later when it was much bigger.

a scale usually helps.. anything we might recognize ... I see the consensus is a probable Wide Brim, but here's a couple more pics, with a 12 inch ruler for scale. (sorry the ruler is hard to see, but it's the only one I have, and a measuring tape was too heavy)

and i dont think the friend was a collector ... but i could be wrong on that ... The friend that gives me the most divisions is somewhat a collector, but she is also a bargain hunter, and will pick up dying twigs to baby back to life. So she has a mix of regular standards and more unique ones. This hosta, however, plus the one in my #6 query, were not from her, but other people, and I think they may have come with their properties, so more apt to be old standards.

since all but one hosta flower are about the same size.. those actually are a scale of sorts ... so brilliant work there ... lol ...

i agree a pic of undisturbed momma would have been great ... but .. whatever.. hindsight .. blah.. blah.. blah ..

the flower structure give good clues to heritage ... but alas poor yorick ... it isnt ringing any bells with me ...

QJ is from josephine ... and the flower pix in the library are kinda close ... but again... just a noncommittal observation ...

Unfortunately I doubt she took a pic.

Scale wouldn't matter much with a new division. However if you could estimate the size of you friends plant, that would help.

I wasn't there when this one was divided, however, I have seen all her hostas, and none were very big. So I'm guessing this one was no more than 18 inches wide, and less than that tall, but can't say for sure. All her hostas, though, are foundation plantings, and get divided when they get too big, so seeing the before pic might not have been very helpful.

If your friend divides her hosta frequently, they stay small and immature. My QJ had small, narrow leaves for the first 1-2 years after I divided it. Then, the leaves became wider and mature. QJ is always shiny.

Some hosta need many years to develop to maturity---like Liberty. Five years later and I said "Wow!" Some hosta, when mature, look very different from their early years, and some not so much. I happen to like them when they are big. Go figure----I have a small property! Sounds like your friend propagates frequently. Perhaps she finds the most joy in that. To each his own! It would be nice to see photos of your hosta next year when it has matured some.

With limited space, and many different types of plants,there isn't much room for them to "spread their wings", so they get divided frequently. Which works for me, as I get various new plants from her every year. 🙂

It would be nice to see photos of your hosta next year when it has matured some.

I'm curious to see how it will look next year, and will definitely try to remember to update this thread with pics.

All my Hostas are waking up for the year, so I'm going around trying to remember who is who, from all the help I got here last summer with identifying my NOIDs.

This is, I think, the divided hosta up thread, emerging now. Still super shiny, but more yellow edged than the white edge from last summer.

Any thoughts? Still possibly Queen Josephine?
