First thing that has to go is the shutters. They are way too small and the ones above the brick are just weird.

it’s such a cute house, I don’t understand why they put the transom window over the door or did that odd brick. It throws everything off.

I wish people would stop trying to do “modern farmhouse”.

Yes! We’ve been stumped on how to make it all work. I believe the transom is part of the original door.. the house was built in 1858.

I think the trim around the door should be white. Maybe a yellow colored front door. I agree the odd shutters should go. Maybe paint the fascia to match the porch railing.

What direction does the house face, and do you have a floor plan of both floors you could share? A plan is helpful so others understand how windows and doors relate to the interior.

Window boxes at each of the 3 windows would really add some interest.

The elephant in the room is the horrid, out of place brick or stone. That is not farmhouse correct. Once that is replaced with white siding the house will take its proper appearance.

I agree with the post above about the brick. Is it paste-on faux brick? Take it off, then assess.

Looks like the door on the left was recently added to add a sense of grandeur to the house. But it’s not quite hitting the mark. It seems very large and quite tall as compared to the other door. Should the porch roof on the right continue on across? Add a portico over the new door? I’m not sure.

Plus the existing landscaping/sidewalk makes things feel off as they seems to be centered on the porch door.

It looks to me like the upstairs is an addition. Maybe a proper portico with some pillars at the door would balance the roof line. I am not thinking the door surround is doing you any favors. It's too boxy. The transom window looks miss placed. They drab gray trim is doing you no favors. As stated lose the faux brick and choose a proper trim color. You might also want to look into a walk way. You have two doors competing for which one guests should use. I would solve that with a curved walk way up to the main entrance.

We don’t have floor plans but are trying to get them. The house faces north-west. The left door enters the living room, the right door enters a mud room. Here are photos of each. (We are redoing the bookshelves and mud room flooring.)

For the upstairs, the pink room is the window on the right of the house. The purple is the left. We would definitely be open to adding larger windows or new windows if we could make it work with the exterior.

Some experimenting. Trying to disguise the asymmetric window/door placement with a porch.

One actual suggestion is to paint the mudroom door so it blends in.

Looks like it’s a real farmhouse, not a faux-farm! Some relatively easy changes, as mentioned above, would make a big difference. Ditch the shutters and faux brick or stone. Paint the door trim white, and the door itself a color you love. Glad the bay window exited with the previous owners.

A simple portico might look nice too.

I live in a similar one that has seen more unfortunate remuddling than yours has. The fake stone is unfortunate. It's nice that the door and surround is still there. Some landscaping would help.
