I have the perfect answer as I am about to do the same for my stacked stone fireplace to ceiling (no copper) however lots of stone and I am remodeling. Look at "Terry Brick LLC" name of company on Houzz.

She is NOT going to make brick for me but paint the stone as she does the brick in her video.

You could change the color of the mortar to make a difference. Actually, I would make an even bigger deal of it than it is. What about copper mortar and a copper light over the dining table. Why is the sectional facing the other way when the FP is such a focal point?

Your sofa placement is fine, I wouldnt want it facing the kitchen either. You have a beautuful home, do not do any more copper or copper mortar (that would be to overwhelming).

If you are unsure best idea is to have a desigher who you would research for (cause everybody calls themselves designers these days). Look at their portfolio and if you see things you like but not necessarily for your house. It will give you a good idea of their talent, diversity in designers is also important as you don't want repeats of what in all the same houses. Meaning this designer

can see what you need and not the mass population. Good Luck

This looks like a non-working fireplace and you are using it as decorative piece? What is going on with the brick?

Have you ever considered changing the mortar to perhaps something darker? I think the light color is emphasizing the stone not in a good way and both then are fighting for visual attention over the copper hood which is the real beauty here. This will give you a visual as to what I'm talking about.

Haven’t thought of doing a darker mortar. I want to lighten the space as much as possible since the ceiling is dark wood.

Having light mortar is not giving you a "lighter" space. Your natural light and flooring is doing that. Your lovely home has a lot of design stars- ceiling, fireplace, copper hood, etc. That is great but the problem with so many is that everything is competing to be THE star. Note in the photo I posted how the copper hood is the star as the stone isn't highlighted by light mortar so there is no competing going on at that eye level. And then the same competing happens as your eye goes from the stone to the ceiling. The stone being highlighted is competing with wood ceiling and those wonderful windows. Need to soften the stone appearance.

Also, adding more color, at least in accessories, would help jazz your space up. It's rather flat looking with everything "brown" and probably why you are thinking that you need to lighten the space up when what it actually needs is to add more visual interest in pillows, rug, etc.

Thanks tedbixby- I couldn’t agree more and is exactly why I’m here. I have zero design sense but know what I don’t like. And you’re right. Everything is nice- and competing at the same time. So I want to make it cohesive, while adding a little touch-up. It’s a beautiful hood, beautiful stone wall, beautiful windows and beautiful ceiling.
I’m thinking of putting in a marble (or quartz) mantel on the fireplace (since it isn’t really functional... I live in south Florida), and painting the window frames white (although my husband thinks black would be good). Then maybe paint the bricks in the fireplace some grayish blue. Don’t know.
Oh- and you should see the kitchen! I want to also “lighten it up” and modernize it.

Probably more photos of your home on the main living area would be helpful to see what you have going on. Also, I'm thinking with you being in S FL that the style direction for you to take may be something like you see in the high end home in Hawaii which use a lot of wood. I'll see if I can find some visuals. And when you talk about lighten up and modernizing the kitchen are you talking about gutting it or minor up-dates? They don't make cook tops like that anymore! Nor do the latest ones last that long. How old is your home?

It was built in the 60’s I think. I’m closing on it next week. Planning some minor up dates. Don’t have the budget for much and want to maintain the integrity

Oh, not living in it yet. Best thing to do then is to live in it for a year before you do anything. During that time you can see what works and doesn't work for you, do your research, put a plan together by what is most important to least and then put together a realistic budget. As what you think you want to do now probably will change after living in it a yr.

Here are some photos to think about as far as style and to show you that you can work with the wood. Though these are very expensive homes, you can still take away design ideas from them.

Please, whatever you do don't use those materials or colors as you suggested as you will end up devaluing the house. There are much better materials for the style of this house than what you are thinking. Post again when you are settled and want to move forward.

IMO you live in a space before doing much of anything regardless of the kids. That FP”\??? is not working are you planning on having it made to work . I think it would be better to have a home you love indtaed of worrying about something you don’t even like . I renovate homes all the time for the better and to make the people who live there happy.
