I wonder if IKEA could design something similar

or find a local cabinet maker; if they use less expensive wood possibly be around 2K, depending on whether or not you are in a high cost area; or purchase RTA cabinets from IKEA and assembly in desired configuration.

That does not look like a curved cabinet per se, more like boards that are fastened to a curved base on the end or possibly a bent piece of beadboard.

These are curved cabinets (in a Johnny Grey kitchen that would likely cost more than my house - even with the lousy range venting).

It didn't seem like the curved cabinets were a key element of what the OP was after. I think the island probably is custom (or at least a hack with stock cabinets), but without the curves and using RTA or Ikea cabinets, I don't think it would be nearly as expensive as Live_Wire speculated. You would need to be, or hire, someone handy to do what Thor suggested.

We got a custom solid wood 4'x4' island with maple top (additional 15" overhang), 6 large drawers, 1 small drawer and several shelves for just over 3 grand. I had to paint it myself. It turned out great. Don't rule custom out.

@cawaps, you are right, the features I am seeking are casters and seating space, along with storage, and flat-top-surface so it can be used as a desk. I have not found a full-sized kitchen island with all of the features. Looking at the suggested RTA or IKEA cabinets…

For reference, the one I am replacing is a 2-seat kitchen island (H=36” , W=48" , D=36” including 12” overhang).

After your advice, I checked IKEA. These are the 2 that fit my ideal measurements. They do not have casters and they do not have drawers/ cabinets but they are under $500.00: $399.00 TORNVIKEN, and $449.00 VADHOLMA. In the end it might be more cost effective than trying to fix my current one ;)

They look very nice.

Today, Houzz added this "How to Sneak In a Study Zone Without Creating Clutter". Photo #4 has a custom island by Irons McDuff Architecture: it has the casters, the seating, and a "hidden shelf" for papers/ books ;)

Update: I am selling my house in about 6 months AND I am back for your advice. I have decided to go with one of these 2 IKEA islands: (1) OPTION GRAY/ TORNVIKEN OR (2) OPTION BLACK/ VADHOLMA. Now not only I need replacing my kitchen island but also try some low-cost fixings in the kitchen (1-counter, 2-pendant, and 3-knobs).

Would you help me select the best combo (island + counter + pendant + knobs)? I would like the kitchen to play nicely with the fireplace in FR, and with the window blinds in the kitchen seating area. The floors are medium-dark wood-like tile, the cabinets have an orange tone, and the walls are white. <Edited: I will take pics, as it is, and post below. TY!>

We have the one with the open sides. Love it. Fits two bar stools, where we eat breakfast and lunch most days, and I can store salad bowls and large cast iron dutch ovens and lots of other stuff on the shelves. Really nice design.

@summersrhythm_z6a and @new-beginning: workbench instead of the kitchen island, thanks for the ideas: I actually love the look of the "Duramax", it has it all (wood top, comes in W=48", and it has the drawers and the casters that the IKEAs do not have), but not the overhang for seating. The Vadholma would look great with your cabs and counters. Regarding the light, the black would look striking but would only provide downlight - ok if your kitchen has great light otherwise. Are you looking for a fixture for above the island or to replace the one above the table? The existing one above the table doesn't look centered and if that's the case, a striking pendant will draw attention to the issue. I would look at inexpensive black hardware that is simple - see Ikea.

What is wrong with what you have currently? It looks good in the picture. I wouldn't spend any money if you're selling. You have to deal with the electrical in the island too and it doesn't lend itself well to a movable islands.

@TBLfromMA TY, you voted black kitchen island, black metal pendant, and black hardware 😉. The kitchen has recessed can lights, so I am only going to change the builder’s grade pendant over the round table. Also, now I will align the table and pendant, thank you for noticing it.

Since it is so close to selling time for you I would look at what the kitchens look like that are selling in your area. Ie look at listings that say pending. I think this will give you a good idea of what direction to go. If you want help with that direction you might want to post some of those pictures here.

The counters you picked look good to me. I would prefer for the look to have the grey IKEA island, but have it painted black. The grey just doesn't work well with your cabinets, but black does, however the black island looks the price more (ie cheaper) than the grey.

Where does the pendant go? Over the table or over the island? If over the table I like the bamboo. If over the island then I think neither as they appear to be more over the table lights to me.

Don't know why the open sides "bother" you. Don't make more work than necessary for yourself. Get the black one.

The black wood top might work better with your cabinets. You need to make sure the wood top works in tone with your existing cabinets or it will not look good. Not sure if IKEA is open so you can go in person. If you can I would bring a cabinet door and see how it looks together.

@weedyacres thank you, I like the style, but now thinking about staging" I wanted it in black to p/u on the existing black appliances. So I finally took a decision to buy the black kitchen island and the SINNERLIG bamboo pendant from IKEA; only to find out that this last one is out of stock ;( That happened, because I tend to get in "analysis paralysis". So I will try again with IKEA, and get that island and pendant, and I will leave out counters and knobs.

I have to focus on getting the best of the space for me, but with an eye on "staging" for future selling in 6 months. I will take one room at a time ;) I have to thank everybody for their comments, they helped me figure out what I wanted and needed.
