Help with layout for tv area in narrow lake house living room!

TIA! This tv watching area has several challenges - furnishings you see here are all temporary. This space is narrow - only about 10 feet wide - and this end of the room that you see here is only about 11 feet long. (There is a wood stove in the middle of the room, with a separate section on the other side.) We need to walk through this tiny space to get to the staircase to the upstairs guest room - terrible layout that we’re stuck with. The windows on the right will soon be covered up because we’re putting an addition on that end of the house — thinking of enlarging the remaining window on the left, and will retain skylights.

How can we furnish this space for 3-4 people to comfortably watch tv? Willing to buy new pieces — style is rustic lake house. My thinking is to remove the shelving you see in the corner, put a corner tv stand there, and then get a swivel chair to go in the spot where the tv is currently? ( Little game table and chairs that are there are obviously going). Help!!! And thank you!!

get rid of the table. keep the TV where it is (but on a lower stand -- it is too high up). then measure the room. try to squeeze in the biggest two couches or sectional that will fit. get a big ottoman where you can put a tray, so it doubles as a coffee table.

the TV viewing angle will be tight. let the older people sit where they can face the TV, and the younger people with their young necks can sit on the side couch.

there will be one spot off to the right where the TV viewing angle will be too difficult (I marked it as "blind spot" below). in that case, two people will need to snuggle over to the other end. but with this layout, 4 people could watch TV here.

We need pix with all the lights on and of all walls in the room. Do you have a floorplan that includes the new addition?

I like your proposed arrangement. Looks like you could add a t.v. on a swivel mount with a small console underneath to the right of the fireplace. As a general rule, the rug under the dining table should be 4 feet wider and 4 feet longer than the table, so it seems an 8x10 would best suit the table when fully extended.

yes, if you have 57in tv, need larger console...darn it. I think teal and blues can look awesome. I think gold accents would work great as a pallet. gold legs on a tv console, you have gold in your art above the fireplace too

I don't think the model layout hinders conversation but it's not enough seating for 6. Use newspaper or blue painters tape to layout the furniture in different configurations. Try the 2 sofas facing each other. 1 on the wall where the cabinet is now and 1 opposite. Another way would be 1 on the 3 windows wall and opposite it. 2 small scale swivel chairs could be added

The problem is that there is a staircase where a side table is suggested on the upper left side above?! So people need to be able to walk through the space....We can’t close off that upper left hand corner at all because of the stairs. There are very few lights in the room currently. The new addition won’t be visible at all from this space, but is sited in such a way that it will close off what is currently the window showing on the right side....

are they the main stairs for that level? it will get pretty tight. like others said, it would help massively if you provided a rough floorplan with measurements.

here's another idea, but since we don't know the floorplan, I have no idea if it would work. you might need to scoot the ottoman out of the way (towards the tv) when not using it.

a lot of brands make armchairs that are "apartment size", with a smaller footprint, but still somewhat comfy for a movie.

also, I'm pushing the ottoman idea so everyone can put their feet up, but with a tray because you gotta put your coffee and/or wine glass somewhere! you could always do a coffee table instead. my in-laws have one with magazine storage underneath, people tend to prop their feet on the lower level, which is nice because it keeps the top part clean.

Thank you! I had same thought. Would love to find apt size arm chairs that swivel?! Layout of the room is really a challenge with the stairs...

I don't know about the swivel chairs. search around for "small swivel chairs" and check their measurements.

you know I was thinking about it last night and realized there's a much more obvious layout for you. this one would give you more room to pass through to the stairs. (depending on the actual size of the room -- my proportions are total guesswork and might be way off.) you could mount the TV on the wall to give a lot of clearance in front of it.

of course this means you'd have to slightly block the window off to the right. but it's a functional layout for a tiny room.

my inlaws have a layout like this below. the coffee table is massive, but there is still just enough space to pass through. it's a great setup for social situations, lots of snacks and drinks on that table. however, that would be annoying if it's the only way you get from the stairs to the rest of the cabin. you might need to do a smaller coffee table if that's the case.

if there's no room for side tables, consider wall mounted lamps to save space.
