I have some finger pulls under my island overhang and they look just like that.

Is it rubbing? Can the door close properly?

I have pulls on 2 bathroom cabinet doors and my GC routed the doors so the pulls sit flush with the top of the doors. He had to route them or the pull would have scraped on the surface above.

This is a question about aesthetics and to my eye this is the logical choice highlighting the function of the handle. If in a routered recess your gap would be uninterrupted physically but visually non-symmetrical in your rectilinear cabinet design, which I think is absolutely fantastic - would love to see the rest of your kitchen, and alter the straight line design in that area. I would enjoy your new kitchen with the handle as it is now, a routered recess could be done in future if you really wanted to alter the look. As mounted now the finger pull is merely a discreet practicality with the full wood panel retaining it's integrity and prominence. Are your cabinet doors push to open? The wood also is beautiful, is it black walnut? You may guess that I also like sophisticated straight line design and your's certainly is.

these types are meant to sit just like they are. I suppose you could opt to router out a spot for them, but to do that for every cabinet would be a ton of work.

What bothers me is that the handle seems to be slid between the wood panel and the dishwasher creating a gap on either side. It just doesn’t feel like the right way to install the finger pull (but then what do I know?). Yes, it’s walnut. Here’s a shot of the WIP.

Also it isn’t rubbing and it does close properly. It just looks wrong when I’m looking at it from the top when the dishwasher is open. I’m visualizing water and all kinds of stuff falling in the gap.

Beth we only have pulls on the dishwashers. All other cabinets are push to open/close.

I edited my comment to mention the prominence of the wood panel over the practical aspect of the handle. Your cabinet maker or installer should be able to recommend a suitable caulking to seal the slight gap at top of DW door panel. Only during cleanup will you notice the door top, rest of the time the expanse of beautiful wood. Rereading your post I now realize that yes routing a recess on the BACK of the panel such that the rear flange of pull is flush with back side of panel is the way to go and eliminates the gap and need for caulk. Unless the DW mounting hardware is designed to have a gap which just happens to be same as thickness of pull rear flange.?

Thinking about doing this same type of edge pull with our dishwasher and came across this thread from a couple years ago. Judith, how has your pull held up? I'm wondering the same! Does anyone have any feedback on using this type of pull on a dishwasher? I've been told by GC that it wont be strong enough for the force needed to open the dishwasher and that it won't be functional.

The pull is not installed correctly. A custom panel must sit flush against the dishwasher door. The top, inside edge of the panel should have been routed so the edge pull would not cause the gap between the panel and the dishwasher door. If a handle is to be used, screws used to attach the custom panel to the dishwasher door must be countersunk.

If you search "appliance pull", you'll never see an edge pull in the results. It may require too much force to open the door. I'd use a conventional appliance pull...or a dishwasher with a stainless steel door.
