Window dilemma and exterior paint color

I’m replacing this bay window on the far left end of the forst and last photos below. We think the former owners must have had one big window originally given where the brick line is (several inches under the existing bay window). I’m getting rid of the bay window and replacing with flush windows and am not sure what would look best aesthetically - 3 solid windows or 3 double hung? I plan for the size of the windows to extend to the brick line (so they would fill that full space where there is currently some siding under the existing windows). But, for double hung windows, I am thinking the midline of double hung windows might fall slightly above that low brick line and I’m not sure how that would look. I‘d Also love paint color suggestions for brick. I won’t be changing the yellowish cream siding above the brick. And landscaping will be a future project once I get the window and front door replaced :) This is a 1959 ranch that had a couple of extensions that preceded my ownership and I want to make the windows look as cohesive as possible with The rest of the house. thanks so much!

Maybe check with Andersen windows? It seem like you should be able to do a fixed window above, with a lower awning window, to approximate the original windows on the right. The windows below are from the Andersen 100 series.

How close to the same width is the bay window space compared to the three large windows on the other side of the house? From the pics, the bay seems narrower so matching them exactly is likely not an option; however, you could match the number of windows.

Since it is unlikely the new windows will exactly match any other windows in the house either, perhaps the focus should be making sure the windows fill as much as the original opening as possible, especially the width. Then you could choose three single windows with vertical framing in between as needed to use up the space keeping the windows equally spaced.

If, at a later date, you change the three large new windows on the other side of the house, you could match the kind of windows if not the size.

Thank you @suezbell! The windows in the bay window will be more narrow. im not sure the contractor even mentioned putting framing in between the replacement windows. He just measured the opening of the existing area fulled by the bay window and divided by 3 with a quote for equally sized double hung windows. to clarify, you are saying you think the single, stationary windows of equal size would look better? thanks again!

@User, do you have accordion hurricane shutters or panel shutters? I assume accordion. Those can be painted but you have to use the appropriate paint for metal (aluminium??). I would get several more bids on the impact windows. Sounds like the vendor was charging a premium based on the amount you mentioned. Not all vendors are the same at all. Not having impact windows is beginning to affect sales prices if you are planning to put your home on the market in the foreseeable future. At least it is here in S Florida. Many buyers will just skip over a home that doesn't have impact windows. JME. I'm a Realtor here.

I think your home is pretty eye-popping now, I would definitely be slowing my stroll to get a better look, but I can understand wanting a cheerier color if your environs tend to be pretty grey. The current color scheme does seem to suit the surroundings. Is there a color you are leaning towards? Would you want the whole house to be the same color or have color-blocking as you currently do? Are the windows to be painted? What colors are "cheery" to you? When I first saw your house a forest green came to mind.

Not necessarily. I was just thinking match three windows with three windows for symmetry -- and get wider windows but fewer of them. Not sure about the cost difference with that. Since your contractor already has the size, you might also ask for a quote on three windows and the installing the second vertical framing.

If you add four windows -- two double hung -- you'd have narrower windows -- and still have vertical framing between the two pairs of windows. Do some math and see how narrow those windows would be before you decide.

Make sure your contractor knows you want to fill the entire window space between the bricks with windows and framing. Understand where that framing would be -- how much will be wood and how much glass and actual window and the cost difference between any options you're considering.

While It might even be possible to use only two windows in the space and fill the width with mostly windows and little vertical framing, however, really large windows may have the potential to begin to have a commercial building vibe. Just to be sure your windows would not be that large, do go by a building supply store and explain to the clerk what you're considering and see if he/she will set two windows that size side by side for you to look at.

Thank you so much @suezbell! This is incredibly helpful. I will definitely talk to the contractor about the different options with vertical framing. I will also make sure he knows I want to entire space to be filled and discuss different options and variations in costs for those options. I'm not sure why the framing issue was not even raised by the contractor. I have never had to do anything like this before, so didn't know to even consider that as part of the project. I really appreciate your input as it gives me a much better understanding of the different factors I need to consider and discuss with the contractor. Thank you!

Thanks so much, Laura! This is a great idea as well and looks a lot like windows I have seen on other houses in the neighborhood. As well as being closer to the windows I have on the other side of the house. Thank you!
