How can I spruce up this garage sale chair?
Comments (17)Cute chair! If you want to save the wood finish and don't want to DIY it, perhaps you can find a refinisher who will come to your home and repair it right there. Our refinisher has told me that if we ever have a small job, he'll work at our home rather than taking it in to his shop. But the finish looks fine on my computer - the back stretchers seem perfect. Perhaps all that's necessary is a good cleaning? I would do as Pal suggests and have the cushions done professionally, but then I don't sew, don't even have a machine. If you go this route be sure to take the cushions in with you as they are, in order to get perfect dimensions. And then throw those musty old ones away!...See MoreSpruce up Exterior of Home
Comments (7)I would remove the shutters on the two over-sized windows. You could even remove them off all of the windows since the only window that is appropriate for shutters is the one on the upper left side. Really your home is more contemporary than cottage. The current shutters don't fit your home's style or window size. Here are two brief articles about shutters to show you why they don't work on your home's style. Shutters vs Shudders All about shutters by Old House Guy Landscaping is the solution for your home. Have a good landscape designer come up with a plan for you to implement over time as your budget allows. Also, paint the garage door a color that blends with the brick so the door will recede rather than pop. The front door should be a different color to draw your attention. I would go with something in the greens or even a dark navy. Add a colorful pot for your plant at the piller. The white is too blah....choose a pot with the colors that you will paint the front door. You have a lovely home! It won't take much to bring out it's best face :)...See MoreNeed Help with Shutters and Sprucing Up Exterior of Tri-Level House
Comments (16)Thank you everyone for your comments! Some things I hadn't even thought of! This house had absolutely no curb appeal when we bought it and we don't like the muted "blah" colors. I'm also not a fan of shutters, but every single house in our neighborhood has them. It wasn't until we went inside the house that we absolutely loved it. We knew we had to do something with the exterior, just didn't know what. Eventually we'd like to paint all the siding and brick, but for this year just looking to change some minor things like shutters, replace columns, front door, landscaping, etc. So many great ideas; this is a great starting point for us to tackle this Spring. Thank you again!...See MoreSpruce/warm up exterior of house
Comments (5)Next time you paint, consider a different scheme. Where the house and trim are both white, there is not enough contrast to add much visual interest ... at least not near as much as there could be. I think it would be much nicer if the house were grey, like the shutters or garage door, and the trim was white. If the house was grey, they shutter could become dark accents. The landscape is the standard builder's landscape that is somewhat high maintenance, with a lot of trimming. If not well maintained, they are able to engulf the house front. If we grew it out, it could look something like this: To be able to make good suggestions, we need better pictures, from a different vantage point. With camera in hand, stand ON the curb. If in the viewfinder you can't see from some of the yard all the way to the roof, turn the camera sideways and use the vertical format. Be lined up with the center of the house. Take a series of slightly overlapping pictures that pan from far left to far right ... far enough that we see the neighboring houses in the background, as your landscape should be responding to the neighbors' landscapes. Then go across the street and capture another scene. This one will include both front corners of the yard. If you need to pan the camera and take overlapping pictures in order to get the corners in, that's fine....See Morepetula67
