Is all white matte subway tile the same - buying sight unseen
Comments (4)Do you want machine made (cheaper; will allow you thinner grout lines) or more of a handmade irregular look (more expensive; irregular tile=irregular grout lines= grout lines will need to be wider for a pleasing uniform pattern.) Another consideration--what became my main consideration--what other sizes/trims/accent pieces do you need/want? It is difficult to mix whites across different tile lines, so if there is some pretty something you love in one line and you're buying sight unseen, best to just bit the bullet and choose the 3x6 field tile from the same line. I wasted A LOT of time trying to find coordinating whites to save money and ultimately gave up. (I am really picky about color matching though, so maybe this is not a factor for the average person.) I did not use matte tiles, but I can give some info about what I did use, in case it might help you (or anyone else lurking!) When I was deciding between matte or glossy tiles, I found all the whites were "whiter" in glossy because they reflected more light and the glossy also looked more traditional/historically accurate/less modern (which is what I was after for my projects.) Machine made: I used Daltile "Arctic White" 3x6 subways in our kids bath reno. It is cheap, but doesn't seem "flimsy." (You always want to order overage for any tile project, but I think particularly in your case when you can't just run back to the store!) Daltile has 3 whites, Arctic seemed the basic white to my eye---(This is what Home Depot carries as Daltile "100."). Daltile "Kohler white" has some gray undertones (to coordinate with Kohler white sink/tub fixtures which have very slight gray undertone.) Handmade: I used Ann Sacks cappriccio 3x6 in "white" for our master bath reno. It has the handmade irregular look but was less costly than some other handmade tile I looked at. When they were both installed initially, I majorly preferred the Daltile kids bath because all the grout lines looked so clean and I'd wished we'd done our master with that and saved the money! BUT once the glass was installed in the master shower, it accentuated all the lovely undulations of the handmade tile that sort of disappeared just looking at it straight on. Now I love the A.S. tile because it almost makes it look like we used wavy restoration glass in our shower. This is a good thing for our 1913--and trying not to look brand new--master bathroom :) I just have to emphasize the Daltile does not look cheap at all. I'm really happy with it and it is a great price point! Have you seen this older thread? It has some photos of machine made subways and handmade subways and discusses differences/is it worth the money etc. Here is a link that might be useful: white subway tile thread...See MoreCan anyone suggest a matte white format floor tile
Comments (6)Do you realy want a white floor in a bathroom? I have dark hair and I would hate seeing everyday "dirt" on a white floor. I keep a clean house, but I want my floors to hide a small amount of dirt that happens every day....See MoreWhite appliances anyone?
Comments (16)maggie, a couple of clarifications to what I wrote: - Whirlpool makes many brands of refrigerators (sold in the U.S.) but they don't make them all. :-) Frigidaire and Electrolux are made by a Electrolux; GE, Hotpoint, Monogram, and some other lines are made by GE (whose appliances have been sold to Haier). Samsung, LG, Bosch, Liebherr, and others are manufactured by still different companies. So while Whirlpool has a huge stable of well-known brands, they haven't reached monopoly status yet. - The 8-10 year lifespan average I've heard/read about is an average. It is possible that the refrigerator you buy will last 10, 12, 15 years. But you probably have read sad stories here from people whose refrigerators lasted only 2 or 6 years before a terminally expensive failure occurred. Like many averages, that 8 to 10 is a not a hugely useful number. Median would be a much better number -- and harder to calculate. - Extended warranties: They're bets that are placed, plain and simple. The company offering a long warranty is betting that they'll bring in more money in premiums than they'll spend on repairs. Customers bet that the extra they pay for a longer warranty will cover an expensive repair later on. As with most betting, the odds are with the house (not your house). In our case, spending another $25 on a $1,000 refrigerator to ward off a $300-400 compressor replacement repair wasn't much of a bet. But I don't know if we would have paid $75. Or $125. We saw a Maytag 'fridge that we liked that was about $300 more than the one we bought. It had a longer warranty and several add-ons we just didn't care that much about. If we wanted the add-ons, it would have been worth the money. But, for us, it was essentially $300 for the longer warranty. Didn't make sense for us. Price the warranty; read it to understand exclusions; and judge whether you might just be better off banking that money for a future refrigerator replacement someday. As for cubic feet, be aware that today's refrigerators have bigger cabinets than they used to. When I moved into this house, it had a 26 cu. ft Frigidaire that just barely fit into its hole in the kitchen. I didn't have an issue moving to a 22 because (at the time) it was just me in the house. When we went shopping this time, though, we found 22s are bigger than they used to be. We were lucky to find one that fits in the hole with a quarter of an inch to spare below a cabinet on top. Otherwise we would have had to drop down to a 20 cu. ft. model. Refrigerators come in a bunch of sizes, but know your measurements....See MoreHi All - Crisp White SW Cabinet Color for Traditional New England Home
