matching interior/exterior doors

I am doing a full gut renovation on our house. We are now at the step of picking out doors. I have picked my entry way door which will be made custom (see photo). It is a small house and the main floor is open concept. The only other doors on that floor is a backyard door which will be glass and black metal and a barn door (two small French door style barn doors) which will be to the powder room. I need to confirm with designer of the entry door but believe it will look the same from front and back which would mean that herring bone design will be visible from the inside. I wanted to design the barn doors to match the middle panel of the entry way door (including a photo zoomed in to show you how I’d like it to look). Do we think this is too matchy or do we like it?

Additionally, I have picked out my interior doors. Attaching photo of the style, but they will be painted charcoal with charcoal thin trim around the door (and white baseboards). I want to pick a different style of closet doors but am struggling as to what to choose. Any ideas would be appreciated? I am going for a modern look of the house if that helps!

A powder room does not benefit from any barn door no matter the style of the door. Interior doors? Should match.

An entry door is chosen to suit the exterior of the home. ..........and if the inside of that home will have a design intent somewhat unsuited, or wildly unexpected? Simple is best.

The wood mission posted, has nothing in common with the entry door you posted,other than it IS a door.

Design is editing. Don't "isolate" just to be different. Harmony is the good friend of unity. Too, there is nothing particularly "modern" about a mission/craftsman door. In OR out. I think you are a bit too much ......all over the place ......versus honed in on a feel and style for either interior or exterior.

Our entry door is three panel, stained, with an archtop. Our interior passage doors are the same three panel, but flat top and painted. Our French doors are divided light, flat top, painted. The rear entry door is plain with divided light top half, painted. The door to the garage had to be fireproof, and is just a slab, painted. All have similar 'bulk'. All are at least three feet wide and over seven feet tall. All have the same 4" casings. Door hardware on entry and passage doors is Baldwin 'Edinburgh' levers. The Pella French doors came with suitable levers. The variety 'mingles' well, but doesn't *match*. AFAIK, for instance, no one has picked up on the fact that our front elevation has simulated true divided light windows, while the rest of the house's windows and French doors have between-the-glass battens.

Go find out what's the best paint/stain for redwood. I do know that redwood bleeds through regular opaque stains. Cabot opaque stains can be tinted to Ben Moore colors but if you want to leave it natural, you'll probably want a clear coat of some kind. Do not trust any information you get about these stains from Lowe's or Home Depot, even though they sell it, the person helping you isn't always familiar with the product. Find yourself a stand- alone paint store that sells decking and siding stain. PS. Thompson's Weather Shield isn't the right product for this.

I personally love dark or medium stained wood, but if I knew I was selling in 5 years or less and that most houses in my area had painted trim, I would go with painted trim. Sigh. You're right. :-( I mean, I *knew* deep down this would be the case, but I've been accused of being too optimistic on more than one occasion, lol, so I was kinda hoping for an outpouring of "Trends are changing! Go dark! Use color! Everyone is so sick of gray now!" It just kinda sucks, to feel like I can't actually make my home "mine" because I have no intention of living there long enough to make it worth it. Ya know? This is the second tract home I've built, and I did the first one for me (lived there 8 years, and learned my lesson on not paying attention to resale), but it's hard to make decisions for the masses. I guess if it doesn't make me outright miserable (like gray paint would, lol), then it shouldn't be that big of a deal. Thanks for responding, rrah. <3

Hi Jan,

Thanks for your comment. The reason we went with a barn door for the powder room is because we minimal space for a regular door opening in or out. We were going to go with a pocket door but the installation would again require taking a few inches away from the outside kitchen area (inches which we do not have). Why would you not recommend a barn door for a powder room?

I’m adding my layout here if that helps.

Also are you saying that my exterior door should just be basic wood from the inside -I.e., no design?

A barn door does not give enough privacy. How about a French door?

Spoke with my contractor and now realize I have a different issue. On my layout of the first floor I have a closet right next to my powder room which is under the staircase. Because of this the door for the powder room is higher than the door of the closet. Height of powder room door matched entryway and windows. If I get French doors for the powder room as Houssaon recommended and get the same style closet door (just regular not French), will it look strange since they do not match up? Contractor can lower powder room doors to match, but not sure that is a good idea.

Have both doors be the same, likely 80”. If the closet clearance is shorter than that still use the 80” door, it will have a sloped ceiling behind it which is fine.
