Woodworking Flooring Design Dilemma

Life Expectancy -Polyurethane Floor Finished With UV cured Acrylic.

Has anyone had their polyurethane-finished wood floor re-finished with the UV cured process?

I see the the urethane is lightly sanded first. Acrylic is the topcoat, then cured with U.V. light. I'm interested in knowing what to expect in 10 years.

I've not heard of this, but if you want a water-based finish that will last decades, Loba 2K Supra AT is the leader of the pack. Make sure you get the one with the "AT" as that stands for Advanced Technology and is different from their products without the AT. There are several threads on this coating here at Houzz if you want to research the archives.

It sounds like a weird form of 'buff and coat'. The UV cured urethanes or polyurethanes are the toughest products available on the market. My concern is the acrylic. I'm not fond of acrylic finishes. They usually aren't as tough as polyurethanes (acrylic factory finishes are notoriously delicate).

My question becomes: why go to all that pain and trouble to do a 'light sanding' of the original finish to coat with a UV cured acrylic? Why not go whole hog and have a full sand/refinish done with the UV cured coating once the floor has been stripped completely?

I also know that polyurethane and acrylic don't play very nicely together. Acrylic is, chemically, quite slick. It doesn't like to stick to anything and it doesn't like other things to stick to it. Which again brings me to the question: why do a buff and coat with a full sand and refinish with a UV cured finish is FAR superior?

Well I have been monitoring this thread and can now add some. I decided to paint (join the club-huh?) a vanity in a guest bathroom which doesnt get used much (in case I screw it up who will really see it?).. the vanity is a dark oak. The floor and wall tiles, bathtub, toilet and sink are all medium grey. Currently the walls are a mauve with shades of white spongepainted (that was handy work circa 1995 or so). I have painted walls, but never wood before so I am still a bit hesitant. I could not decide between painting the vanity white, dark brown or black. I was leaning towards the dark colors but then decided to go with white. I have primed using the SW Prep Rite, PRo Block and just last nite started to use the Pro Classic in Greek Villa ( very nice white).Since I am chicken, I have started doing everything on the insides of the doors. After one coat of primer and one coat of the paint, it looks decent but definitely will need another coat of the paint. ( I was planning on 2 coats so that is not a surprise). I am pretty sure I got the satin finish, am wondering if that is what you are using? I am so chicken. Now I am having second thoughts if I should have painted the vanity a darker color. I also don;t know what color to paint the walls. I frequently don't decide these things until each step is done... but if you have any suggestions for wall color with grey and white and I am typically more traditional as opposed to contemporary. Backsplash not what I expected :(

is it just me or are there two sections of the backsplash with a different lot of tiles? I am talking about the upper left tiles in your first photo and the lower right strip of tiles in the second photo (by the outlet and plastic bag on the counter). Either these are a different color all together or should have been blended in to the overall pattern (one here, one over there, etc) so that they don't stand out so much as being different in color. My husband is also easy going and would also put his foot down on changing it out so I can understand that aspect of your dilemna. Maybe if the place you purchased from sent you two different color lots or your tile guy wasn't observant enough you could have them chip in on the cost of replacement. To me, these colors are very off from each other and that bothers me more than the granite/tile clash situation. I do think your kitchen is looking great and even if you can never replace the tiles, you have a very nice kitchen and once accessoried, I think your disappointment might lessen.

I think that is universal, as I know of no state that is willing to spend millions of dollars a year to test thousands of unique appliances in order to come up with their own rules. (I prefer to use the relevant example) ;D " What I'm understanding is that installation instructions are designed to meet building code." - yes, but many of the installation instructions seem to be worded by lawyers, and designed to be decieving to the average consumer. "Listing" is what happens after the independent testing laboratory makes sure the product's clearances label and installation instructions meet the ANSI standards and put that "UL sticker" (label) on it. - the whole code process works together with the "listed and labeled" requirement and ANSI safety standards. . Please do NOT use Rejuvenate or Mop N Glow or Orange Glow or any POLISH on your floors. These "restores your floor's finish to a healthy glow" type of products are temporary polymer products that are considered a "floor polish". Bona produces a 'cleaner' (which sounds like the product you are using) as well as a "polish" with "restorative" properties. The polishes are to be avoided like the plague. While the short term benefit of added sheen is a bonus, the LONG TERM difficulties are the massive down side to these products. If you start down the road to "polishing" you will be caught in a horrible "wax-on; wax-off" situation. You will need to apply the product every 6 months or so. The product "builds up" and looks waxy or plasticky after awhile. And then you need to STRIP the product every fifth or sixth application (every 2-3 years). That means a chemical stripper and "hands and knees" scrubbing for hours and hours and hours. And then you have your dull floor once again. You get to start the whole cycle all over again. Whew. It is exhausting. And this is why we say "No polishes!" on your hardwood. They are far more trouble then they are worth.

I tend to agree with you @SJ McCarthy. My husband thinks the floors need nothing and I think they need something. Someone who doesn't clean or live with them wouldn't notice much if anything in one visit. I spoke with the U.V. guy today. His product is an acrylic urethane blend. He'll look at the floors and this may not be a job for him. I'd respect that.

Sigh...polyacrylic...my favourite (she says wryly while rolling her eyes). Polyacrylic is one of my LEAST favourite finishes. Traditionally it is used on cheap flooring products. I don't know how the polyacrylic reacts with UV cure...but I don't want to be the one to find out.

Polyacrylic is still very slippery, chemically. The cleaning products used on the hardwood will be KEY to the success/failure of this application. As in, "Any contaminant such as Murphy's Oil Soap will ruin any chances a new coating has to grab the wood".
