Wow, thanks for the input. I really appreciate it. I’ve held off on getting a door because I couldn’t decide. Here is a full photo of our house. Do you still think I should remove the front shutters?

I totally agree with other posters - would either remove the shutters or replace them with operable ones of the correct size. Also if the grilles in the garage door lites are removable I would suggest removing them. They really aren't in character with the other windows. I like Flo Mangan's idea of a natural wood color for the front door. It provides nice contrast without being eye popping. It's a very nice house btw. Good luck!

Whatever color you pick for the door you will need to repeat in the furnishings on the patio , vases or large pots and in the landscape.

One of my personal favorites with a traditional style navy homes is a soft buttery yellow.

Modern homes do well with some bright burst of color, but I think a more subtle approach feels more natural with your home.

No, don't add anything, it needs subtraction and simplification, not addition.

The grilles in the garage door need to be simplified to plain panes. The vents should be painted to match the siding. Remove those (truly silly) shutters. If it were my house, I would either install a stained wood door or a nice yellow door with the navy siding. My first impression was to go with yellow (beautiful with navy) but wood and navy are also classic and beautiful together and the picture from Flo sealed the deal. Beef up the trim around the door--somehow your windows have more adornment than your front door.

The blue with a buttery (leaning towards daffodil) yellow as mentioned above would be DIVINE, in my opinion. Agree to remove the shutters and refrain from adding anything. Your house is an absolute charmer!

I agree with the suggestion to remove the grids from your garage windows. You might be able to substitute far more simple cottage style grids for the ones that you have (which are very busy looking!). If simple grids aren’t available (from the manufacturer of the garage door), then NO grids are better than these.

The garage windows should be "easy" to switch out, contact the manufacturer. And if they ordered the wrong ones (check your contract/order sheet), then they need to fix them!

Muntins matching your current window style would be much better, yet I suspect a simple plain glass pane or a simplified grid pattern may be even more visually pleasing. Place a large piece of dark paper over the windows to get an idea of how a simple pane would look. Go through the manufacturer's catalog to see the options available.

I would lean toward no horizontal muntin/grid but keeping the vertical.

Lovely house. I like the natural wood door or the yellow and then add wood planters. Agree with removing shutters and painting the vents to match siding.

One more reinforcement. With all the detailed architectural elements in white and the dramatic color of the body, you don't need a "pop" of color on your front door. You need to calm things-you don't need more "accents". As I did in my mock up, paint that vent (I made it the wall color), beef up trim around the door. It is a very pretty home and you will also get some cool relief once you get your landscaping and grass installed. I hope you can get a Knotty Alder front door and keep it neutral. It will be a soft form of yellow. Hang in there, you are in the home stretch!

I would simply seal it. It is protected under porch roof but wood still needs protection and it prevents discoloration. Lol. Great minds Melrose!

What is size of door needed? I think it is 36” wide (too small for single door entry btw) but not sure of height. You will need a couple urns beside door on porch with taller evergreens to help folks be drawn to front door. How wide is entry behind this door?

Ok. You have to go with it. What’s the reasoning for this entry door? Just curious. Most front entry doors on new homes are 42” especially if single doors? I wonder if you have room to put in slim sidelights even though it would be difficult. Darn Melrose. I hope there is a way to install a door and sidelight into this front door area.

Well...to me none of the things suggested need to be changed...they just add a little interesting detail ...i would never interpret those trims as shutters..and the tiny garage door window trim is attractive...the white squares could go with the siding as they seem more “function” than trim...

I think the unpainted wood doors are to farm style. I like the idea of yellow- but the picture above is WAY too bright

You need a wood toned door and if you are up to it I would find a wood toned garage door also.. i Love blue houses mine is the same color pattern.

I like the idea of a turquoise door similar to what’s in this pic, but I love any color that has some blue in it. Love your siding color.

I had a dark blue house with a natural wood Craftsman door, just like Flo is suggesting. The natural color of the wood matters, so look at that Craftsman style from different door companies. I believe mine was hickory. It looked gorgeous with the dark blue paint. We oiled it every other year.
Second choice: the buttery yellow you posted above (second one) would be very inviting, which is what a door should be.
And yes, remove the shutters.

This is my next door neighbor’s door. Can anyone tell if this was painted to look like wood or if this is this wood?

I would buy a wood door that is clearly wood. That one doesn’t show natural grain, which is part of the reason to buy wood doors. My garage doors were also hickory and we oiled them every other year. They were very striking.

Wood stained a medium wood tone. Can’t tell for sure from photo of neighbor’s door. Don’t use that as your color tone. Go to a local lumberyard or door supplier and look at the different woods. Every wood species takes stain differently so be aware of that. Hickory is pretty but can take stain in a way that tends to look streaky. I prefer the knotty alder or mahogany.

Please do a wooden front door. It looks so much more timeless than a bright door that screams look at me

Actually, I think the front door was mahogany and the garage doors hickory. I did not stain the mahogany, but it wasn’t a raw door. The Oregon door company put a clear finish of some kind on it.

If I go with the wood toned door you all are recommending, can I do anything with the inside if it? The wood tone of the door that will look good with my exterior will not look good with my interior. I have coastal colors inside 😖

You “could” but it distracts from pretty entry. You don’t need it.

Is there anything else I could do to change my exterior to not only look better but to get away from the “cookie cutter” look? There are 2 other homes with this look (just different exterior colors) in my neighborhood.

Do your landscaping drop dead gorgeous! Use large moss boulders and a great large specimen tree for front yard. Curved beds deep and lush.

I suggest you add white arbor over garage doors. This will provide a different look for your home along with a blue pot fountain and paver walkway to driveway and lush landscaping with some large boulders will distinguish your home from all others. Re: painting the inside of the wood door. I would not do that. IMO a wood door looks good with every decor if it’s the front door. I have also been told that if you do a treatment on one side of a piece of wood (table or door, for example) it will eventually warp. If you’re going to buy a drop-dead-gorgeous craftsman door, don’t paint it. The one in my old house was ordered from Oregon and the house is in NY. It still looks good, according to my neighbors.
