Furniture placement on area rug

hello, I have two swivel reclining chairs along with a sofa that i want to put on area rug. i am confused as to how to situate the furniture. The chair base is a round metal as shown below. Normally i place the front legs of the chair on the area rug along with the front legs of the sofa. The chairs are Width: 29" (73.7 cm) Depth: 38 1/2" (97.8 cm). The sofa is Width: 80" (203.2 cm)

Depth: 39" (99.1 cm). I have a coffee table for in front of the sofa and will be getting end table/tables based on suggestions from this group. We have a wall with a fireplace adjacent to a wall with TV. The quick diagram below shows the TV wall and the Fireplace wall. The other sides are open. Do I place the chairs directly on the carpet or leave them off the area rug.

You can leave the chairs off of the area rug or get a rug that can accommodate all the pieces.

In the top picture it looks like the sofa only has the front legs. Thanks sharing I like the look of the chairs on the carpet. Especially with a swivel

A bit small, but WHO is telling you that you need to hide it under the sofa and furniture? Hand-knotted rugs have to be covered up? I have one 10 x 14 hand-knotted with all the furniture on the rug. Then I have a 9 x 12 hand-knotted with everything (mostly a very large sectional) off the rug except the coffee table. It all works if the rugs are large enough for the space.

In case anyone who gave me any previous advice happens to see this, I just wanted to say thank you again! I haven’t posted follow up pictures (but I will)- just wanted to find the right rugs and get everything done first. I work full time so have been finishing the look in my spare time... and absolutely love it. I did end up painting the window casings back to white (but leaving the doors black) and between that and the new layout, the whole area feels so much bigger and brighter and happier. Posting on here was a very positive and productive experience, and I hope if (okay- when) I post again about some of my other rooms, you’ll jump in to give me some awesome ideas!

Let's get you some answers.... I'll comment first to get the ball rolling. I like your room. Yes, add another sofa table to the back of the sectional that faces the room (either a twin of what you have, or a longer table) Your end tables are fine, but a little small for your lamps. If you want new end tables, I'd choose rounded ones to mimic the round lamps. However, that will compromise your storage (Is there anything in those baskets? Do you use the baskets? Add some snuggly throw blankets in your colors. A sectional is perfect for TV/movie viewing. I'd like to see a pattern in either a rug OR wall art. You said you have a pool..... Bring that relaxing feel indoors with this Feizy "ocean rug" (Feizy Lorraine collection) It looks like sunlight reflected off water. I've seen this rug in two different blue colors ocean and midnight blue. I think that if you plan to layout the furniture in the shape of a sectional, you may as well go with a sectional :) The side by the patio door doesn’t need anything. But you can remove the side table (which is so cute!! Use it in another space. Love the color) Or you can put art , or photos. Or a larger plant Cute space!

I actually do not think a rug always hase to have the furniture sitting on it at all. I use Persian rugs often for clients and I do not like the legs sitting on the rug IMO it hides the aptteren and creates dents in the rug. This is my LR and I cahnge the furniture layout often so my rug has no pieces sitting on it except for the coffee table and I find it is just fine

Patricia that looks beautiful. It's so confusing, I just read an article that the area rug should not only have the coffee table on it; then I see your beautiful room with furniture off carpet. Hats off to the talent you have and can see how well to put a room together. I love it.

Thanks . I trully believe rules in design are a guidelines and can often be bent in certain instances with good results .IMO thta is whatmakes a space yours

Your flooring can also figure into this decision...whether you want more or less of the flooring to show..and also the style of the rug..pretty hard to give specific advice with info offered...your chairs for instance will slide on an oriental...but not on a shag...something to consider in a chair that could move a little when adjusting...a shag will also disguise the base ...which is more function than decorous
