Need help finishing off modernizing/lightening up Family Room
Comments (24)Bestyears, I just had to log in to say first, your room is fabulous. I love the color you painted it and am jealous of your amazing sewing skills. I love the fabrics you have chosen. The second thing I wanted to say is to think long and hard before purchasing the braided jute rug from Ballard. I absolutely love the look. It has to be one of the best looking jute rugs out there, but it is a maintenance nightmare. It takes some getting used to underfoot but will eventually wear to a somewhat soft feel. The maintenance however, is tremendous. I had one for 2.5 years in our primary living area with heavy traffic and it was like have 15 large shedding dogs with a few cats sprinkled in. Fibers everywhere. If your room doesn't get much traffic it might work otherwise I would try to find something else first. I replaced it with a cheap seagrass from Lowes for the time being and it doesn't shed at all. Laurainlincoln might can share more if she has this rug. It might not wear for her like it did for me. Comments (22)I haven't read through the post - but one thing I can tell you - is that you may be making a 'costly mistake' by coming here to this dilemma forum, particularly with the pics you have posted - because the pics in no way, shape, form, or fashion clearly show your space. You even say that the space is 'not as dark as it appears in the pics' - so, really - how can you expect to receive any kind of accurate assessment - even under the best of circumstances, which TBH this forum is not. You are going to get all kinds of advise here - some of which may be good, and some of which not so much... and then you are going to have to weed through it all - and this advise is being given to you based upon pics that are barely viewable - so keep that in mind. I will say that your space looks beautiful, and the architectural features of the space are beautiful. I think the only thing I might change would be countertops - to a marble, cultured marble, marble-like quartz - or something to that effect. It could be granite. But would be light/white. And it is just a general fact that light/white counters with dark cabinets will lighten a space. But I really have absolutely no idea, based on your pics, what color your countertops even are - in terms of specific color - because I can barely see them. And I have absolutely no idea what your floor looks like, either. There are many things you can do with lighting to lighten a space, as well. Really - you and your husband need to hire a professional - or professionals for this....See MoreMy kitchen is very modern and a bit cold - how can I warm it up?

Comments (7)Can you share your budget for changes? Your kitchen is very pretty, but I can see how insufficient lighting and dark cabinets could be frustrating. (I love the cabinets by the way.) I do think some brushed nickel hardware can add a bit of bright jewelry to your kitchen, but it won't make a big difference in the overall brightness of the space. In terms of lighting, I think megs1030's suggestion for under cabinet lighting is a great one. That would probably make a pretty substantial difference. Consider hiring an electrician to add recessed lighting in the ceiling. It kind of looks like there might already be one fixture near your ovens. You could consider painting the walls a lighter color. What you have now looks really nice with the finishes, but it's a mid-tone color so something light would bring some more brightness to the space. You could replace your countertops with something much brighter - closer to white. Obviously that would be a substantial cost to replace what are already lovely countertops just to bring more brightness to the space. Probably much more cost effective to just add lighting. One more suggestion that is a bit of a personal choice: you have a lot of items on your countertops. It's not messy or cluttered in any way, but there are a lot of items that could be tucked away potentially. I find my kitchen looks brighter when the countertops are almost completely clear. Put your knives in a drawer instead of a countertop block. Put whatever appliance that is over the dishwasher into the pantry. Put the oils into the pantry or in a cabinet. Obviously this changes the function of your kitchen so it may not be for you....See MoreIndecisiveness
