I would not do that. It would not look good and half of it would still be brick. What your friend should look into is getting rid of those two evergreen trees. One seems to have damage already.

Leave it alone. They could do other things. The house looks fine as it is. But if they want a change, maybe darker trim and/or a new door. Landscaping and lighting can also make a big difference.

Replace the chain link fence with something nicer and landscape the yard. It's the yard that's dragging this property down, not the house.

I guess friend has a need to work on something, and act on their urge to get their creativity out... figured whitewash is a nice look and inexpensive. Since they don’t have too much cash on hand. Yet, even professionals in here are agreeing might not be the best look.

they had a walkway, but got ripped out to do waterproofing.

The leader from the gutter system can be painted to blend in with the brick. If the funds are available and they want to keep the property fenced, I would get a really nice black metal one.

The current gate can probably be saved and painted, possibly sand blasted and powder coated. That would save money. Get an iron worker to create a fence that works with the gate.

What colour?

Paint the fence and gate black. I recently spray painted part of my mother's chain link fence and posts. It was very easy to do. Rustoleum spray paint. Give the gate a bit of a brush with a wire brush before painting.

Downspouts dark brown so they don't contrast against the brick.

This isn't a house for an elaborate driveway. Black asphalt will look just fine.

I can't see enough of the house to see where a walkway would go so I won't comment on that. But again, nothing too patterned or colourful. I've seen too many "fancy" walkways that clash badly with the house's brick, although they probably looked great at the showroom or in a brochure. I'd stick with dark brown slabs.

If she wants to plant an evergreen hedge along the chain link fence, she might not need to get a new fence. Plant the evergreens close enough so as they grow, they grow into the fence. Then as others have said the gates can be scraped cleaned and painted with paint formulated for metal.

Some varieties of arborvitae, being careful not to get the ones that grow over 8 feet. Privet would be perfect, but it is not evergreen.

This is privet growing through an iron fence on either side of the gate.
