Basement bar - paint the wood or leave as is?

We are putting new vinyl plank floors in, painting the wood paneling white, and likely painting the drywall behind the bar a shade of gray. I need help deciding on:

leave the bar as is (what color floors would you do then? Debating between gray wash, light oak, dark wood ...)
paint the bar white
another idea

Please help!

Think I would advise stripping the bar and then staining a darker color. Can't say that I like the horizontal paneling on it. Would you consider adding some stiles and rails to it for a more panelized look? You could also consider adding a metal bar foot rail and some bar stools to make it more comfortable. Good luck!

I think the ceiling is more of an issue than anything else. If the drop ceiling could be reconfigured and painted to one color, and I think white would be good - I believe this would greatly enhance the space.

I would leave all the wood. I would paint the painted areas around the bar, and any other painted walls, a warm white. I think I would use Benjamin Moore’s Ballet White or Swiss Coffee. And I like BM’s Natura Line.

As far as the floor, since you are looking at LVP, I would personally go with a lighter wood look for flooring. Something like this.

A wood bar top from onsite timber is a fabulous idea! About laminate countertops - our current house has them and I love them. My kids do crafts with glue, glitter and paint directly on them and I wipe the mess right up. We can slosh red wine on them with no worries. Recently, my daughter used a black sharpie on them and I got that off easily with just a magic clean eraser. We're not high maintenance people, so I really appreciate that all the care you have to give them is a little cleanup with soap and water and, if they do get banged up or you want a new look, they're inexpensive to replace. That being said, we're planning on different countertops in the new house for aesthetics, but if I had to get formica for budget reasons, I wouldn't be too disappointed.

I decided to return, and look at the wall again... :) well, the bar of course will extend some feet into the room. Idk if I came across -- that tv side could bump out its little depth, framed and drywalled, with whatever unit or such works. The door I suppose could be left unaltered, except it'd be flush with wall bit above door. Paint color, if a new color, could go above door too. Add a cute flush/ semi above the little entering spot.

Read what you posted outloud. You have a faux attachment to something that requires negative attention and you probably will never use. Hmmm! Kind of like hoarding for someday. I’d remove it. Figure out why it gets wet and whether there is damage and/or mold that needs removal. If you feel you need to “do something” with the space, decide what problem it might solve and turn it into a positive.

for sure, i would just make sure you like the counters and floors together - we view counters vertically when shopping for them but they will be large horizontal surfaces in the room once installed so floors & counters really play off one another — if you love the green walls then leave them - Your darker walls and white ceilings are high contrast so the eye picks the many jigs and jags in the ceiling & soffits, which you may really like - i was just saying if it were me, i would want to downplay that and paint everything a soft white but it’s just personal preference
