Question about syncrhonization of doing filter/water softening regen.

DH deals with this stuff.....but he changes the iron pre-filter at a different time than he regenerates the water softener. Is there a good reason to do it this way, or should he do them both at the same time? To me, it seems like he should change the water filter at the same time. Thoughts?

I suppose it's all moot at this point, since our water softener is almost 40 years old. We're looking into a new one. The plumbing guy says our beads are shot. At this age in my life, I can relate! haha

But....until we get a new softener, is there any advantage or disadvantage to doing those 2 things at a different time?

I might also add that the plumber said that we should only change our prefilter when our water flow decreases, as opposed to changing it once a month, like we do. What are you thoughts on that?

He sells prefilters with 20 microns, and we use one with 5 microns.

Thanks!
