@Lilyfinch z9a Murrieta Ca Mine is in a 5-gallon pot so it doesn't reach its full potential. I think I will need to move it to a bigger pot. It's a beautiful rose and will be happy in the ground. Helen

My bolero tree rose came from Walter Anderson’s nursery! They have the best prices for trees I think . This one was gifted to me but I think it was 35$ or so!

I’m sorry I don’t have many pics of it ! That’s really all I had. Sometimes I don’t take pics when I have things to deadhead or move and then the peak is over .

Hi Deborah ! My iochroma is in a pot so I don’t worry . I’ll just heavily prune it or move the sucker out of the way. It does grow so fast but man the hummers love it. I just added the pink princess from Annie’s too !

I have the princess one -- it's nowhere close to becoming a monster. Just a well behaved shrub in a tricky spot. My blue flowered ones probably want more sun...but I'm hopeful they'll eventually be good shrubs with pretty flowers. Have you tried the Cantua buxifolia? That one blew me away this last spring. I mean, wowza. I bought two more -- planted one in the ground and one in a 5 gallon can that I'll have to figure out where to put it (or maybe even gift it...). Let me know when you are giving botanic garden tours of your back yard!

I think so, but not on purpose! I got my Augusta Luise rose in November from Palatine and have been watching these fat buds progress, but then...the rose didn't look like AL! So I've been frantically checking every hour. I thought it might be Eden, but a sharp eye suggested Biedermeier... (thank you, Mas!) It's a healthy bush, lots of big, round, lovely buds, and now this one opening. So far it reminds me a bit of Sheer Bliss. No fragrance yet.

The fragrance came later for me too. I’m so sorry you didn’t get Augusta tho!! But honestly ( and I love pastels so much ) I love my bierdimer more than Augusta ( I know !! Shame shame ! ) . Sometimes it’s just so bright for me but I’d never part either.

Okay -- if you see my post above in this thread, you'll see that I had a mad crush on cantua last year. And I bought several more. BUT. Both of mine died in the heatwave last fall. I think they're dead. No new leaves. So that gives me pause as to where I'd put the new ones.

I haven't tried the tricolor one. I tried the straight cantua buxifolia from Annies -- and that was just incredible. I can't even begin to describe the hugeness and the delight. I actually invited people into my backyard just to see the blooms. YUMMY. Incredible. Just WOW. My cantua hotpants, which I was so excited for, got crowded/overshadowed by the other one. So my plan now is to put my hotpants and the buxifolia in big pots so I can move them into shade when another heatwave hits...I guess they're from cloud forests -- so makes sense that they want sun, but also the misty coolness of an understory? I don't know. Maybe I did something to kill them. They were in my huge file cabinet that I'd turned into a planter.

Re Annie's favorites...oh goodness. I love the campanulas, the greek and ladybird poppies, the rose chiffon ca poppy, the apricot chiffon ca poppy... My roses from Annie's have all done well -- Grandmother's Hat, Duchesse de Brabant, Felicia, Golden Celebration, and Veilchenblau. My blue iochroma is just lovely (but you have that one). My agrostemma ocean pearl...oh gosh. My mind is going blank now. The CA natives (but I usually get some locally) like the baby blue eyes, penny black, tidy tips, CA blue bells.... The delphinium cobalt dreams is amazing, but mine don't come back for me in the garden, so I put them in pots and they are returning, hallelujah! I don't get the re-seeding that Lisa does. Maybe birds eat up all my seed. I've not had success with the Orlaya, though I don't know why. The scabiosa did TOO well and were too big/tall and hid my roses, so I took them out. The blue diadem bachelor buttons do well for me. I can't do the hollyhocks to save my life. Love the penstemon blue springs, but I can get that locally, too. The verbascum does well -- I think I did southern charm, but it's much shorter than I thought it would be, so I never see it b/c I put it in the back of the border. The chantilly snapdragons have done super well. My chantilly peach were super vigorous last year, but I pulled them out in spring becuase it was just too much of the same throughout and the roses started coming in. I left one patch of the peach this year, but then put in two new chantilly purples which have done so well. Lately I'm enamored of the dianthus -- so have the raspberry one and the Hercules going now. Of course the myosotis looks good under poet's wife, as does the tall chinese forget me not. The rabbits really went for the yarrow cameo, so hoping I get blooms this year after spraying with liquid fence. I'm trying the golden feverfew underplanted in rose bed for the lime green foliage. Love the lime green heuchera for that, too.

In my native area - which is well away from the roses and quite dry -- I am in lOVE with the eriogonum latifolium seaside buckwheat. Low maintenance, quite a lovely sea of them naturalizing, and the bees and butterflies go crazy all summer for them. In January when I prune the roses I weed whack the tops off the buckwheat and let them go nuts. I also like the red buckwheat and ceanothus and salvia pozo blue in that area (not to mention the native goldenrod, manzanita white lanterns, verbena de la mina, mimulus monkey flower). But I got those plants from the local botanic garden and nurseries. In that area I did plant an Annie's find: the Family Jewels Tree! (asclepias physocarpa). That was a big hit. Tee hee!!! I do love the Penstemon Thorn. I'm enjoying the anisodontea strybing beauty -- three in a row along the top of a slope. They are always blooming, though more loose in form than I thought they'd be -- I was hoping for more privacy screen. But they are in a lot of shade. Geum Totally Tangerine puts on a huge show, and I moved it to a new spot, but I don't think it's happy there. I planted a Vitex Agnus -Castus in my "native" area, but it is soooo slow growing. The Muhlenbergia Pink Muhly Grass is lovely nestled in with my fruit trees. The sphaeralcea Newleze Coral is along the wall of my house - sloped and south facing, and does really well. I chop it back in January. I gave my neighbor the echium tower of jewels, and we waited two years, and then it was amazing, and then it was ratty and never re-seeded. I would plant it again, but we've already established I'm IMPATIENT, so I just don't want to have to wait that long! I've planted many calandrinia for my friends who want no maintenance, low-fire risk, low water color -- but I can find that in 1 and 5 gallon cans, so don't order from Annie's. My new things are the pee wee oakleaf hydrangea and annabelle. Hoping they come out of winter dormancy soon (or did I kill them?). I just planted the heliotropium and some violas. Oh -- the ageratum corymbosum is very pretty. Have that between Munstead Wood and Yves Piaget. It's blooming right now. Oh -- and the tiny gomphrena. That one is gorgeous on the top of a slope at the back of the border and just lends movement and color and a lightness that contrasts nicely with the rose bushes.

A local nursery used to carry some of the Annie's (pre-pandemic) but no longer. I think Annie's couldn't keep up with the online orders. On trips to Northern Cal I've stopped at Annie's nursery 2-3 times. But mostly I wait for a sale that includes gift certificates, buy the gift certifcates at 15 or 20% off, then wait for my plants to come available or another special with free shipping, and then go hog wild. One time I teamed up with a neighbor so we could get one big order and split the cost of shipping. Santa Barbara and Richmond are about 6-7 hours apart -- so, no, not a quick drive! I'll look for some pics...
