1950s Orange Brick Ranch - New Roof and Gutters
My 1950s brick range is in need of a new roof and gutters. I bought the house a few years ago and have always disliked the red 3 tab shingle roof. I think a grey dimensional shingle would look much better. Should it be light, medium or dark grey?
I'm getting new gutters as well. I've read gutters should match the trim or the roof. I have no plans to repaint the window trim or siding since there's also a vinyl siding addition in the back and I can't afford to do it all. So, do I go with white gutters or grey gutters? I AM open to repainting the garage door and/or front door but I'm not sure if that would be a bad idea since I'll be keeping the windows and siding white.
Advice and guidance appreciated!

Comments (52)This was a great thread and detroitnate did a great job. If it were my house, before I did any planting I would have widened those steps and the walkway. Every picture in the series I focus on those tiny little steps and want to rip them out and redo. I've read that the main walkway leading up to a house should be wide enough for two people to comfortable walk side by side, that rule of thumb seems just about right to me. Comments (8)Your new home is quite handsome -- clean lines, nice materials, looks comfortable and sheltering. As much as I like Frank Lloyd Wright and his Cherokee Red, your red overwhelms the house. A soft gray blue or gray green would work better with the cream brick, the tan roof, and any landscaping you might do. Since the garage dominates the house facade, I'd save up for a nicer garage door style. It's not a cheap fix, but would add a lot to your home in terms of looks and perhaps value too. Don't get anything fussy, but something with clean, strong lines that could work with a contemporary home. A more contemporary door would be good too. Other than that, just better landscaping! Comments (7)Just put an addition on my house as well, and it looks very similar to yours, only I have a front porch. Because my house has a hip roof, we were only able to go from an 8 to a 9 foot ceiling for the back addition. Otherwise, it would have looked weird in the front of the house. Your architect will be able to help you with that. I would go somewhere from the front door to that walkway between the garage with the addition in back. I'm not a pro, so don't take my word for it....but I think the placement of the roof lines with that area will make the most sense. You'd be surprised what an update it will make! Lucky for you, your garage is in line with your house.....my was at an angle and made for a VERY tiny laundry room coming in from the garage, but it's just the two of us now and we will make it work. I could only make my addition 20 feet wide because of the angles of the different roof lines and hip roof. It doesn't appear you have that problem, so could make a fairly large addition out of it! Comments (93)Your next step is to get samples of the colors and paint big board of them, and look at them at different times of day and in different spots. Please don't skip this important step - colors look soooo different outdoors, and in large areas, and beside other colors, as many disappointed Houzzers have found out. Many years ago I painted my master bedroom a warm beige, but because it was contrasting with a gold carpet, the pink stood out and I had a pink bedroom. 3 years agoWhen your budget allows, get a cottage style door. The one you have now feels Victorian.
Think about getting a panel with windows for the garage door.
Remove the railing. It is a visual barrier to you entry. Plant only perennials there. Add a few plants along the foundation. Be careful not to plant too close to the house. Allow a foot at maturity between the side of the house and the plant. Chose different heights and leaf color. Include some evergreen and some flowering. Don't plant anything that will grow above the bottom of the windows.
This color, but not this style would look great!

3 years agoUpdate: I ended up going with a black roof as none of the grey options felt quite right. I did remove the porch railing as suggested and had the beams wrapped in white vinyl to match the garage door, gutters, and little bit of siding on the house. The gutters installation isn't totally finished but I wanted to share the progress. I will update again with a full photo once the gutters are complete and the sun is in a different part of the sky. Hoping to get a new door, or at the very least paint the one I've got, for a finishing touch.
