Need help - how do I fill up this front entrance space?
Comments (3)A few suggestions (plants not specific as don't know where you are) ... Think I would paint door, door frame & posts just white. Shutters, one of the greyed teals. Explore color on one of the paint mfg. websites where you can upload photo (a better one w/ less shadows) and see changes ... like @ Valspar.com....See MoreWhat To Do With Front Door Entrance
Comments (16)Enjoy, I have a similar entrance to yours. My steps are reversed though (walking towards the window) and a garage was added years ago to the side of the house. The railing was removed long ago. Since moving in a couple of years back the hidden door from the front has always bothered me. Is your door not facing the street? Am currently having a wall pergola put up across the front entrance which extends from wall to wall, is 4' deep. There are 3 posts, one on the landing. The cost of wood was less than $100. There still remains a wonderful old climbing rose which will now have a place to grow well. I also curved the brick walkway out along the driveway with plantings between. It has made a complete difference in the look and brings visitors to the door. I would like to tile the steps and landing, but will most likely stain the concrete for now as it is still in excellant condition. Concrete patch works wonders and you can do this yourself. It would look like new stairs for you. I used it on my back patio and was an easy job. You have a great area by the landing to create a garden, plant lots of flowers and a couple of bushes to hide the side of the stairs. Even a small bench in the corner would help soften the entry. A more expensive option, but one that would change the entire look of your front entrance would be a full porch. Had the budget been there I would have done this for mine. The suggestion of green for the door is a great one. Red and a deep green are wonderful together. New numbers, larger lamp and mailbox too....See MoreCan I paint a brand new prehung mahogany front entry door right away?
Comments (28)Mahogany is used as it is a great exterior wood as it is used in boat building. Can it be painted? Of course it can but covering such a decorative premium wood is not advised by anyone who likes real wood. You can paint it and have the look you want and also have the strength and decay resistance of the wood. A shame but its your door and you will still have to repaint every other year anyway so the maintenance will be the same. I would never paint paint it as it is such a shame to cover that beautiful wood grain. Look into Waterlox it is great exterior coating. ANY exterior paint, coating, clear, etc will require maintenance end of story. DO NOT slap on a HD polyurethane as it will flake and cause all sorts of issues on a front door. Mahogany will change color in the sun. Staining with another wood color again makes zero sense. If you wanted a chestnut or hickory you should have just had the door built out of that wood. I can never understand people buying one type of wood and then saying they want it stained the color of another but this question is asked daily. Look into UV dyes. the dyes can tint the overall color of the wood but allow its natural look show through. I would us the Waterlox and see how you like it. You can always paint over it but if you paint there is no going back. You are trying to make a $1000 door into a cheap $200 door. With that overhand you should be fine. Plus one of the biggest killers is storm doors that bake the the door as they don't allow air flow to cool the door....See Morewhat can I do to this entryway?
