Small Mother-In-Law Space Design
Comments (16)miruca, I really don't have any suggestions to add. But, wanted to let you know that our daughter and her husband, finished their "bonus area" above their 3-car garage as a guest area several months ago. I don't know the dimensions, but it is larger than your area. They have two small bedrooms (one has a queen bed with dresser and decent closet; other has a twin bed with a smaller closet); full bath with a linen closet inside; large family room area with large TV; and a kitchenette with bar and 4 barstools! We travel down there frequently as we will be building on property next to them this year. We absolutely LOVE having our own space now when we visit. And, this is in all likelihood where we will be living once we sell our present home and build the new one. We are retired and early risers. The grandkids love to come visit us as soon as they get up in the morning. We have our own coffee maker up there, sink, microwave, and an undercounter fridge. All the comforts of home and more. And, while yes we can hear the garage doors open and close, but that's never been a problem for us. :-) Good luck on your project!...See Moremother in-law suite floor plans.
Comments (2)I'm guessing that you're either looking for a plan with two suites downstairs (one for you and one for your parents) or you're wiling to have your master suite upstairs but want a plan that provides your parents with complete small apartment downstairs (i.e. their own kichenette, living area, & bedroom). There are lots of plans available to two "master suites" but usually one of them is upstairs. But, if you're willing to be on the second floor just search "dual masters" and you'll find lots of options. But, if you want your master bedroom suite downstairs as well as an ensuite bedroom (or a complete "apartment") for your parents, you're going to be looking at a house with a fairly large footprint so you'll need a nice big lot. But, depending on what amenities you want a few such plans are available. Here are some that I've found. http://www.theplancollection.com/house-plans/home-plan-6473 http://www.thehousedesigners.com/plan/7096/ http://www.thehousedesigners.com/plan/the-ross-4427/ http://www.theplancollection.com/house-plans/home-plan-3146 http://www.dongardner.com/plan_details.aspx?pid=3231 http://www.dongardner.com/plan_details.aspx?pid=3403 http://www.dongardner.com/plan_details.aspx?pid=3248 http://www.monsterhouseplans.com/plan11-286.html http://www.monsterhouseplans.com/plan15-674.html Try searching for house plans with the terms "multigenerational" or "intergenerational" or "vip suite" Or, you might consider a home plan that would allow you to add a small guest cottage accessible via a covered or enclosed walkway. Maybe something like coastallivinghouseplans.com plan # SL-374 Alternatively, you might want to look at house plans that include an elevator which would allow your parents to access a second floor bedroom. Good luck!...See MoreDesign/layout for mother-in-law suite
Comments (1)Im also planning a similar project. Our preliminary plans called for a u shaped kitchen with a peninsula with seating on the exterior side. I’d recommend that over an island given the smaller size of the open living space. We’re also putting in railing on the sliding glass door so it functions like a Juliette balcony....See MoreNeed help with awkward room layout for mother in AL studio !
Comments (12)as the floor plan and measurements of all furniture are not clear it is hard to offer solutions to your dilemma...however there have been many discussions like this and many of them involve setting the bed lengthwise along the wall...without any problem..which leaves more room for most of the other needs..like seating by the window ...even a second chair for visitors...and a small dining table w/ easy seating if that is needed...i would definitely return the oversized chair...for smaller ones and begin collecting colorful accessories..such as comfy decorative pillows...and throws where needed...next the walls can add lots of room for pictures of family ...or times of fond memories..if they will allow painting ..it helps to add colors she loves to at least one wall...if you are not creative find someone who is...to help you...this is the sort of thing that needs to be made cozy and homey more than “decorated”...See MoreWestCoast Hopeful
