Honey Mangoes (aka Ataulfo).
Comments (30)Mine has a story...fast growing seedling for the first year- hardy to cold....then slowed in ground. Ok,I stuck with it...then it went a year with no growth. Another third year it started to grow..but very tightly spaced nodes. Early this winter I thought I might move it..then thought, the heck with it..that's another two years of waiting to seeing if its happy right? So what happens? This year- its 4th- its been growing like gangbusters..two small flushes and then one big one already this year on 75f summers in the bay area. I think Mangoes in California take time to adjust to clay soils. Some people in the state have more loamy clay and dont have as much a problem. Right now its about 4'. Very small for the age..but it looks normal, not stunted and leaves are full sized. One last...full sun. The more the better....See MoreAtaulfo- store bought seed ?
Comments (4)I never noticed that two sprout theory. I know like you Larry/greenman I bought a yellow Mango that had no name (not (Ataulfo or Champagne) that to me tasted like the best small yellow Mango fruit I ever had...and I planted two seeds. I should have planted more. As I understand it,all those small Mangos- including Manila- grow true from seed. Did yours say from Mexico and the grower and some numbers for an id? And last..I lost that label. I had put it aside..not sure where it went....See MoreFinal results of Baileys Marvel first norcal fruiting..
Comments (4)Thanks Mango dog( I picture you having a good old tan bulldog guarding a pile of hardgrown Mango's in your yard-lol). BM,is not something I can tell bay areans is going to be the best investment...but,it IS fastest -height- growing, makes a decent trunk fast also. What I'm not sure of is how resistant to root rot in winter,my biggest Mango growing worry, is. In pots, that never rears up ..in ground is a big difference....See MoreNorCal Baileys Marvel-SWEET!..
Comments (35)Hey mangodog. Yes,its rootstock now. In 2011 and 2012,It was constantly sending suckers up below the graft. I would cut them off..but they seemed so vigorous. And so were the Baileys...just only vertical growth. It had reached 7' not including the pot. YET, it did grow a single Mango fruit below the graft ON THE TRUNK. It didn't taste any different from the fruit that grew up high normally. And it didn't look any different. After fruiting in 2011,in a pot, I left it uncovered on a single 32f night in January 2012..and it was devastated. All growth shriveled and died. In spring 2012,new sprouts on a trunk about 2' tall grew...slowly. I then planted it in ground were it grew well that summer. Again,we had a cold January 2013..BUT, with only a T shirt over it..NO damage. All summer of 2013 it grew, and really added bulk, stems went from those wiry potted plant type to real tree like stems. Its now about 40 inches tall..about 3' wide. And with covering and the light bulb during this years freeze, has no damage on it..still flushing leaves are greening. Now,when it will fruit again I dont know. Since 2007,I've gotten Manila,Baileys, and Rootstock Mango to fruit in the bay area and yes, they were sweet. Unlike Papaya's or Guava's...all the work pays off in sweet fruit here. And a nice looking small tree....See MoreSusan Highland USDA Zone 9b
