The #6 best budded cultivar in my garden was the very late blooming From This Moment On, with 27 buds on the best scape. I like this yellow polychrome's big flowers and tall scapes. It's multiplied well since last year when it bloomed sparsely on two fans, and usually has more than one flower open on each of the five scapes.

I hope more of you will be posting on this thread. I'm going to post my Top 10, which all have more than 20 buds.

Coming in at #7 is Black Panther with 26 buds on the best scape. The other scapes ranged from the mid-teens to 21.

Debra, compared with yours, most of my daylilies don't have many buds. I don't generally count buds just look and guess and observe the season. Also bud count of the highest ones was down. For example, Spiritual Corridor didn't have its amazing numbers this year. Sears Tower isn't loaded but that could still change. It seemed to get more and more as time went on last year.

Brad - I had no idea some of your VT's were so bud heavy. They will be blooming for a long time! I remember Purple Riot from past years. It's a pretty one to have so many buds. My Coral Majority is in too much shade now to have many buds. I do remember years when it had about 25 per scape. Thanks for posting your best budded ones!

A lot of mine that did well the previous two years did not have as many buds this year. August Frost and Mississippi Magistrate, which both had 29 buds last year, were only in the teens this year. Part of that was because we had such a dry June, and I didn't give those two supplemental waterings this year. I was more focused on watering beds where I had seedlings growing to see which ones of those could rebloom.

Kay - 18 scapes is still a lot. I think the most I've ever had on any one plant is 14, and that was after several years.

Reckless Girls has tied with Black Panther for #7 of my best budded. I thought its best scape had 23, but today I double checked and it had gone to 26.

I forgot one. One scape of Art Gallery Expressionism had about 18.

I have gone out and counted buds, unfortunately, not with a pad and pen in hand. I always get sidetracked before I get in so forget. I will do better! But i just got in from counting buds on Hakuna Matata. I think it has finished putting out buds. It is registered as 41-45 buds. Rare for me to get even close to the registered count on a daylily! I know in counting, I have lots that are around 20, I am good with that. Actually, I am good with 10 or more. Tuscawilla Tigress has counts with 20-28, I don't think I had ever bothered counting before. I was going to get rid of it this year, not that fond of oranges, but it looks a LOT better to me now, LOL.

Brad - I sure like that Art Gallery Expressionism. If you ever have any to trade, let me know.

Nancy - If Tuscawilla Tigress has counts of 20-28, it's well worth keeping around. I remember when I first came to the Garden Web forum back in the 90s, a lot of people would list that one as one of their best.

I finally counted buds here. Thought I'd do just a few but as usual got carried away and counted on most of mine (I have a small collection). Now I will need to get the pics in one folder and make a post, which will take a while and probably all my computer time for today :))

Ok here are mine:

In the first place is seedling Last x EOTP with 31 buds. Other scapes 27 21 and then mid teens, plus several IR scapes. Because of reaching over 30, if only on one scape, it deserves two pics lol

#2 - Lullaby Baby with 27 (22 22)

No surprise here it's always among the first, if not the first. It only had 3 scapes this year though so I was wondering if it was going to be here. It will probably generate a couple more because it's a bud builder.

3rd place - and one of my favorite daylilies of all - Arctic Lace with 26 buds (22 17 on others).

Made the list last year and it also had an IR scape but not this year

I love it so much. I wanna risk it and take a piece of it and plant somewhere else in the yard.

#4 surprisingly - Elegant Candy - with 24 buds (21 on the next best scape)

#5 another surprise - Red Friday, 23 buds on the best scape (with some nice branching), 18 15 others

They both grow near each other in what I thought was not the best spot, bad dirt and all, and yet..

Next in a separate post.

6th place, 21 buds - Deliverer. Other scapes 17 16 16 which is the average highest bud count on a lot of the others

#7 - 20 buds, a tie between 2 seedlings,

another EOTP kid, this one was among the best budded last year, and has IR scapes

#7a - seedling out of BSAT. It has 3 scapes, 2 with 3 branches, 1 with only Y, 20 18 and 11 buds on them. No other sdlg (except for the bud queen) has 3 way branching, not even Blood Sweat and Tears itself

#8 - 18 buds - again only seedlings and a NOID which was so huge I had to cut a part of, maybe that helped

several with 25 scapes, and of course two huge clumps, Soul on Fire with 32 scapes, and Ruby Spider with 45 scapes. No wonder it had 43 flowers one day. Bud count is very low on RS though, 7-8 buds per scape.

I have so many huge massive clumps, I don't know why they grow so big.

Wow, Nat! The first seedling is so pretty, and I'm impressed at its bud counts. You list he parentage as Last x EOTP - Last ? and what does EOTP stand for? I like the other EOTP kid too! I'm amazed Arctic Lace performs so well that far north. Mine had 28 buds many years ago, but has been 10 or under for the past few years that it's been attacked repeatedly by grubs. Elegant Candy being on your list doesn't surprise me. Over the years, many forum member have listed it as a top bud producer. Mine gets less than 5 hours of sun a day, and still manages to have bud counts in the mid teens. You've got a lot of nice seedlings with bud counts of 20. Are you thinking about registering the EOTP kids or any of the others?

My #8 best budded was Clown Parade. It only had two scapes, one with 25 buds and the other with 23.

I forgot about one of my registrations and three seedlings that had high bud counts..

I guess Gypsy Cats, with its best scape of 29 b8ds should be #4.5

Then these three seedlings should be tied at #6 withi From This Moment On with 27 buds:

Into the Mystic X Symphony of Praise - A late emerging scape has 27 buds. The other scapes had a range of 12-22.

Blazing Saddles kid - a late blooming fused scape produced 27 buds. It's still blooming now.

Tied at #9 in my garden with 23 buds were two registered cultivars and one seedling.

Purple Passion's Promise has 23 on its best scape, and 16

-21 on the others.

The Tribble with Blue also had one scape with 23 buds, and 14-20 on the others.

Seedling Texas Blue Eyes x Violet Tranquility had bud counts of 23 and 21.

Oh, sorry about the abbreviations in my post, I am so used to calling them that plus I didn't think anybody would be interested in my not so new cultivars crosses.

EOTP - Eyes on the Prize, Last - Last to the Buffet Line. I was going for a dark pink with darker eye and edge and was trying EOTP as pod and pollen parent with a lot of stuff eyed and not. The closest I got was x Strawberry Candy but it's missing the edge lol Now with the other two I want to lighten the petal color instead of make it pink. I would like to register something just to give them names haha My DH says we need to register our very first pink seedling ))

Maybe my Arctic Lace will not have as many buds when it gets older like all the other former bud queens, but for now I am enjoying it. Nice to know about Elegant Candy, I didn't remember that. Elegant Candy is a pollen parent in the 2nd EOTP seedling ))

Nice performers here, all! It will be a bit until I can get to my scapes to count buds. Some of my best looking ones haven’t gotten going yet.

You all just got me curious , just went and did a scape count on a couple that looked pretty good. Pizza Crust and Laura Harwood both have 19 scapes. Pizza Crust could be in the running for best budded, time will tell.

Sherry - The only daylilies I have that multiply well enough to have more than a dozen scapes are Spacecoast Francis Busby and the seedlings I've registered. I never register one unless it's multiplied to 20 fans. Pizza Crust and Laura Harwood must be good multipliers. Here, the bigger a clump gets, the fewer buds it has per scape, so I usually divide mine when I have 10-12 fans and sell or trade the extras. Or at least I did that in the days before Covid.

Nat - Eyes on the Prize must be a good parent. I like both of the seedlings from it. If you ever do register them, let me know. I love the way they look, and any plant that gets that many buds in the north is a doer. If the fragrant pink seedling you posted above the one your husband wants you to register? I really like that Man of Sorrows seedling too!

White Eyes Pink Dragon - The range of buds on the other scapes was 6-18.

Heavenly Snow White - The range of buds on the other scapes was 7-18.

Rainbow Maker - The other scapes had a range of 6-16 buds

Cretaceous Crunch - The other scapes had a range of 12-18.

The red seedling is gorgeous! Heavenly Snow White looks so pretty in a clump. I am glad you posted the range too, I feel better now )) Oh and it's my observation too that the bigger the clump the fewer buds it has. I do have too many big ones though to get to them all in one season. Nice to know about the 10-12 fans rule.

Thanks for liking the seedlings! It'd be exciting to register something. No, the one he wants to register is our very first one, 6 or 7 yo. It's smaller blooms but nice because it reliably double scapes and is early. The fragrant one we both like the pink color but it doesn't open sepals, I will still keep it ))

And that reminds me, how many seedlings are you watching? I know you have several great whites, reds, purples, etc. Do you want to make a post with all of them? )) I am going to later.

Nat - I've been posting seedlings all summer, and toward the end of June I did a post on the progress of some of the older ones Maybe you can find that one.. I've got a lot of seedlings that show promise. Honestly, I don't know how many I'm "watching". I know there are nine that are headed toward registration if they multiply well enough, and another 20-25 I'm hoping will improve bud counts in the next year, so they can get on the registration path. I'd love to see a post on your seedlings. I think the regulars here are probably sick of seeing mine.

Thank you, Kay! I was counting bud scars today on some of the seedlings. Somehow the yellow one with 40 went to 42 before it stopped blooming, and the near white one with 40 has 43 now. It seems to be doing some bud building.

Also, I found another registered one coming in at #10. Razor Eyes had 21 on its best scape, and 12-13 on the others. In past year, 14 was the most buds it ever had.

Debra, I remembered the post, and found it. They are all red. It's interesting to see the progress, I need to organize my notes and this will help me with culling as well.

Seedlings are hard to remember because they don't have names, I think. I try not to post too many although I mostly take their pics lol But I don't think anybody's tired of seeing yours!

40 is a lot but over forty is really great, yay seedlings ))

Nat - I did some other all-seedling posts during the first half of June with some of the others. If things stay dead around here with only a few posts, I may do a final seedling post. I never did post subsequent photos of some of the UF seedlings.

While I was picking pods today, I noticed one I left out that is a definite bud queen. High Water Mark had 26 buds on the best scape and should be with the #7 group. The other scapes had 12-14 buds.

Nat - I'm glad you found a couple of seedling posts. I have trouble remembering what I posted here, and what I posted on the NGA seedling thread. HWM does have a gorgeous watermark. I thought it was blooming for a really long time, but I hadn't checked its bud count until yesterday. I like it a lot because it sets seed in 90+ degree temps.

While I was weeding yesterday, I noticed Miss Demeanor had one scape with a lot more buds than the others. It should be tied at #10 with others that had 21 buds. The other scapes had from 11-14 buds.

I was just checking my VTs I mentioned above. Autumn Fires is 33, as is The Last Melon, September Star is about 28, and Sophie, not shown about is about 31. However, the buds on The Last Melon, Sept. Star and Sophie are not done developing so I suspect the numbers will go up. They did last year. I'll get some pics to show the branching on these. The branches are well spaced out.

Not much has bloomed here with outstanding bud counts. Even my Autumn Minaret is having an off season. The two best I’ve had are Coyote Moon with 16 to 18 buds per scape and Her Best Bloomers with 19 to 23 buds per scape. I’ve never counted buds, there are very few daylilies growing in my garden That match any stats the hybridizer say the plants should have.

I noticed today that one of the scapes on Last Chance for Romance has developed 21 buds, so it would be tied with four others for #10 in my garden.

Debra, Her Best Bloomers is in her second full season here, did so much better this year. It’s hard to capture its color correctly, a rosy red, I love the color!

It’s nice to see how well Last Chance for Romance is doing. Mine is brand new, hope to see some blooms next season.

Sherry - Don't give up on Last Chance for Romance blooming. The first year I had it, it didn't put up scapes until almost September. Last year it had 20 buds. It does extremely well for being in part shade here. I think Her Best Bloomers is a pretty one!

Updating some of my bud counts based on bud scars: August Frost x Winter's Angel has overtaken the yellow seedling as my No. 1 bud king with 47 buds. I think it's done bud building now, but we'll see. The yellow seedling turned out to have 41 buds, and Seedling "Leonard" finished with 34.

Those are some impressive bud counts, Debra. My VT Sept. Fires and VT the Last Melon are continuing to bud build. I had said 30+ but more like 35+ now.

VT the Last Melon finished up. However, VT Autumn Fires Has got to be 40 or more buds on each of 3 scapes and building. It has been blooming since July 5th.
