Can I use 12x24 floor tiles in a small bathroom
Comments (16)You can check flatness by taking a pair of tiles and placing them face to face or back to back. If there is any gapping around the edges or in the center when you look at them from the side, then they are not perfectly flat. That doesn't mean that they can't be used. It just means that they will look better if they are not laid in an overlapping pattern where you get lippage, and it is important, if they are bowed, that it is consistent from tile to tile. I did a small bathroom in 18" square tiles that were perfectly flat and I still chose to align the tiles in a standard, straight set pattern. Comments (12)When I suggested running it the long way I was considering the best look for the bathroom beyond too. I like a long edge to run into the room. It will make less cuts by the tub too so the edge is tidier. I don't know how wide the hallway is but to me the layout looks very chopped up since there's only one full tile in each course. With the 1/3 offset that an amateur should probably use it will be even choppier. It will be one large format tile next to a sliver of the other. The pic Bill posted is beautiful, but it looks like the hall pattern follows the pattern that was chosen for a larger space. That's why I like the stacked pattern here, running the length of the hall and then continuing into the bathroom....See Morewhich direction for 12x24 tile on master bath floor and shower
Comments (6)Do you have a box of the tiles? You could lay some on the floor and just see what is visually appealing to you. We did this, and decided to lay them left to right (not door to wall) because it is was just more comfortable to look at. If you lay out a couple of rows of tile one way, and then the other way, you will have your answer. When you do it, cup your hands around you eyes (like race horse blinders), so that you are not distracted by the rest of the blank room. Look at it one way, then switch it and look at it the other way. Whichever way looks better to you is the way to go. And just for the record, I like having a toilet room too. People have strong opinions on that subject....See More12x24 Floor Tile Direction (with photos)
Comments (30)Thanks, everyone! Here's another factor I didn't mention... my contractor told me that my wall was really out of plumb... If he were to straighten up the walls, I'd lose 4" in width on the toilet back wall. I made a choice - maybe the wrong one - that I'd take unevenly cut floor tile over losing 4" in a narrow space. So, if the tiles go longways, opposite the floor planks, the "off" cuts would be the long part of the tiles, and probably significantly more obvious than if the short end of tiles are cut... That may end up being my deciding factor....See MoreSofia Akhter
