Do you think the BM “Classic Colors” paint deck has better colors?

Just wondering what everyone’s opinion is? Should I just head to the “Classic Colors” deck first?

Not necessarily better. Just different. And it depends.

The BenM Color Preview deck is a collection of color strings. Each strip started with a hue parent and then 6 child colors were created by reducing the formula in uniform increments. The majority of the strips in the fandeck are different values of colors from the same hue family and same (ish) chroma. Chroma being how grayed or vivid the color is.

The Color Preview fandeck is unique because it is the only one out there from common, major brands that's a collection of color strings.

People think every fandeck is like Preview, color strings on each strip, but they're not. In most brands, you'll find colors from different hue families on the same strip and the arrangement of value and chroma is not perceptually uniform.

The Classic Colors collection was compiled and arranged by the BenM color director at the time it was developed. Which means the arrangement of colors on the strips is purely subjective. Which is why there's no rhyme or reason to the order of the colors on strips or the fandeck itself.

It really depends on the project. What region, interior or exterior... it just depends... either one or both collections might be useful.

Regional color is probably the biggest consideration as far as which fandeck you should reach for first.

One of my least favorite "color tips" is that only 20% of the colors in any fandeck are "good" colors and no one uses the other 80%.

While specifying color nationally and internationally I quickly learned WHY a fandeck has over 3,000 colors. Different colors are ideal for different regions. The % of colors that are ideal for the light and seasons in the U.S. Midwest aren't necessarily the same colors that are ideal for the Southwest region, for example.

Most people only use the 20% of a collection that's well-suited to where they live.

Thanks everyone - very interesting replies. See I would never have thought it was on the dark side. Also interesting that redbazel had a tan / olive turn out with it. I was going to use it in my laundry room which I believe has South windows and lots of sunlight - then last night I thought perhaps in our new bathroom which has very very little natural light but I am thinking from the responses I would be better off putting this color in the sunny laundry room. So then am I to think that with the LVR number the closer to 0 you get the darker it is? Thanks again!

Benjamin Moore Regal Select is now labeled paint & primer in one. The other Benjamin Moore Regal is called Regal Classic. The difference between the two is that Regal Select is now NO VOC even after tinting using Benjamin Moores Gennex Zero VOC colorant system. Eventually Benjamin Moore will be discontinuing its older products that uses the universal colorant such as Regal Classic, Super Spec, Super Hide and so on. As these products are converted to the newer Gennex Platform. Super Spec replacement is Ultra Spec, Super Hide replacement is Super Hide Zero, Regal Classic replacement is Regal Select. Super Hide Zero is not recommended and should not be sold for residential painting but for places that get painted often such as apartments or schools for example. Also since Benjamin Moore owns Corotech Coatings they will be discontinuing most of there industrial products or relabeling some of them with the Corotech label. Corotech is a blend of there best products from Benjamin Moore, Coronado, and Insl-x. Benjamin Moore interior wood refinishing is moving to there Lenmar product label. Coronado is a lower price point which in the Tough Walls line it is a quality between Benjamin Moore Super Spec and Regal Classic lines. Coronado Super Kote 5000 is a quality between Super Hide and Super Spec lines. Its not always about the solids in these paints there are other factors such as the resin and grade of ingredients. I recommend looking at the tds (technical product data sheets) for more information. Benjamin Moores architetural coatings (Aura, Natura, Regal Select, Ultra Spec, ben, Super Hide Zero) are moving to all be Zero VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) which is why products such as Super Spec and Regal Classic will be discontinued. If you look at the back of the cans on the bottom they do say manufactured by Benjamin Moore & Co. Montvale, NJ. For more information of products look at the product data sheets www.benjaminmoore.com , www.coronadopaint.com , www.lenmar-coatings.com , www.insl-x.com , www.maxumstains.com , and www.corotechcoatings.com . All of these products are manufactured by Benjamin Moore. Regal is out of your price range I would use Coronado Tough walls. Coronado Tough Walls is a scrubbable, high hiding, low odor, and spatter resistant paint. Also make sure you are using the correct roller cover and brush, it does make a big difference. Laurie: Northampton putty looks awesome in my bedroom. I wanted something more brown but maybe I shouldn't mess with a good thing. I'll paint a huge sample board and tape it up in my PR and post pics for your opinion. lacombe: I'll post a picture of my sample board in my PR for your opinion. pluckymama: I'll paint a huge sample board of jamesboro gold along with northampton putty and post a picture for votes. I went on the easyrgb website to convert SW Hopsack & Portabello to BM colors since I don't have a SW fandeck. SW Hopsack converted to these BM colors: Jamesboro Gold, Jackson Tan and Woodstock Tan. SW Portabello converted to BM Davenport Tan, Jamesboro Gold and Kingsport Gray. Isn't it ironic that both colors when converted to BM gave Jamesboro Gold as a close match. Maybe it's a sign?!? I'm crossing my fingers and hoping I won't be disapointed with Sag Harbor Gray for my kitchen. I love my Minas soapstone! I purchased a mineral oil beeswax from William Sonoma to oil my soapstone. It takes a bit more elbow grease but last twice as long as plain mineral oil. It's also not as messy. Good luck and keep me posted.

Well, IMO, the artwork you posted, of the wine bottles, is perfect for the PS. I think your kitchen right now is SO monotone that the brown/green in the PS will actually give it some life, some warmth. My suggestion would be to get a sample pine and paint as much of the kitchen using the sample paint as you can (you can probably paint the entire kitchen with it). then live with it for a week, and see how you feel about it. You might not like it at first as it will be a change (although not a dramatic one!). I kind of get the feeling you're hesitant to make a move because of that, which leads me to believe your first instinct will be to regret any change (which also explains why your first choices of paint color were so darn close to what you've got there now!). At any rate, the brown/green of the PS will definitely be better than the pink of the Twine! I really like the way the PS shows in that inspiration pic of the bathroom. and it will be great with your countertops too.

I don't know if it best but I agree that the Historic colors make choosing easier. I meant BM, not sure about others.

Personally I favor the Classic Colors collection, as I find the Color Preview colors much too saturated.

Interestingly, the Color Preview was to replace the Classics collection when it debuted. However, there was such pushback from designers and decorators that were used to the Classics colors, and loved so many of them, that Ben Moore re-issued the Classics. Kind of like new Coke and Classic Coke ;)

I fiddle with almost every chip color. Makes no difference which deck, I just want what works best in the space : ) The color scientists will beat on me, but I've been asked "oooooooohhhh what color is that " so many times, I hardly care lol.

I’ve used Benjamin Moore paint from both Color Preview and Classics collections. I generally prefer colors in Classics because they are more muted (less saturated/vivid) and often a better choice than a similar color from Color Preview.
