Seeking help on lining up wall cabinets / base cabinets / range hood

Hi everyone!

I'm sure this question has been in people's minds before, so hopefully someone has a good answer!:)

I'll be installing 30" base cabinets on either end of a 36" range. Should the wall cabinets that go on either side of the wall mounted range hood be 30" or 24" cabinets?

I worry that the wall mounted range hood will look "squished" or that it will vibrate onto the cabinets whenever we use it if I went with the 30" wall cabinets. However, I'd really like the wall cabinets to line up with the base cabinets just under them as they will be my only wall cabinets (everywhere else will have floating shelves).

Also, the 36" range (my one "splurge") will be the focal point of the kitchen + I plan on getting a wall mounted range hood in stainless + glass (choosing glass to "lighten" the look and hopefully make things not look as "squished").

Thank you, this is helpful! I always thought the range hood + the range were supposed to be the same size! At least that's how I've always seen it and had it wherever I've lived. Is there a reason for this? Is it for design purposes or aesthetics? Oh, also, I don't even use my range hood much as if I fry anything, it is only a light stir fry. Not sure if that matters. I appreciate your help/tips!:)

So the cabinets would be arranged as follows:

Base
- [Stuff]
- 30" cabinet
- 36" stove
- 30" cabinet
- [More stuff]
Wall
- [Shelves]
- 24" cabinet
- 3" gap
- 42" hood
- 3" gap
- 24" cabinet
- [More shelves]
I wonder how the 24" cabinets, each hanging alone on the wall, will look. Maybe there should be additional cabinets on either side, maybe with interior shelves and glass doors(??)

If you look at the Modern-Aire site, they have several shapes where the front tapers at the top to the depth of an upper cabinet, and the sides are straight so as to butt up to, and cover, the yellow cabinet sides you mentioned. Their typical sizes are 18" and 30" high, but you could get a 24" custom one if your budget allows. Or you could get an 18" and have a box made for above it to cover that area and to which you could attach replacement moulding. The box could be made of either wood matching your moulding or sheetrock. Vent-a-hood has a stainless direct replacement if you decide to stick with the same size you now have. Wow how awesome is the ability to photoshop! Elwydee's verson looks great! Think that's the same as the first one you did isn't it? Your 2nd verson with the added cabinet also looks great. From that angle it doesn't look strange with the ceiling change above. Nancy made a good point though. Maybe you could check out both of those isues with another mock up from another angle or simulate with some cardboard at home. RKB and Elwydee can you please share what photoshop software you used? I learn something new every day on this site! Thanks.

This is an interesting thread. I think both ways can look good and both ways can look bad (hood flush with cabinets or hood with space next to cabinets). The more you stare at the photos the funnier they look. In the OP I immediately liked the second photo of the hood flush with the cabinet better than the hood with space next to it. After reading all the comments and staring some more it all began to look funny to me. Do what you like and don't be swayed too much by others opinions. Half the folks will love something and the other half hate it.

May I add a question? If you have a stainless pipe for the hood, does it go to the ceiling? Are your cabinets to the ceiling?
