Living room make over

Need help redefining this space. The furniture will all disappear as its from the previous owner but I dont know if I have to stick to the same living room layout or how I could use the space better? Im open to all ideas. Please help.

3 years agoYou could also do a sofa + chair or two. Swivel chairs are one convenient option.

Comments (19)I agree about consulting an architect or a designer who can work up a scale drawing including perspectives. That said, the ~ 8 foot ceiling was the standard for decades (and still is in much construction), and people have been perfectly content in reasonably sized rooms with 8 foot ceilings. I think the need for extra tall ceiling heights, particularly these near double height spaces, is grossly overstated in modern architecture. I live in a building with 14' ceilings and 23 foot (approximate length) parlors. This is a Very high ceiling. The floor I lived on with the 10 foot ceilings was a much more human scale for an interior, and 8.5 - 9 would have been adequate too, without the ornamental ceilings....See Moreready for living room overhaul but can't get over awkward room. help!
Comments (13)Love the color of the walls and that wonderful paneled wall. I agree that the tv is in the right place on the paneled wall. Here is a floor plan which may work for you. Use the space that is not under the catwalk above as the seating area. This way the walk thru will be under the lower ceiling. Tuck a 87" wide sofa with a chaise end on the right of the fireplace with a console behind. Install wall sconces for lighting at the console instead of lamps. Lose the big lamp (it's ver nice) and use smaller scaled floor lamps. Get a matching 66" loveseat and angle off the sofa. this will create a more open layout and not so boxed off from the kitchen. Add two matching swivel chairs. The coffee table is a 48" diameter with four round ottomans or floor pillows. The rug is 12 x 15 so that it anchors the furniture and includes the paneled wall and the fireplace into one cohesive area. Along the staircase wall is 10" deep low cabinet or bookcase up to the ceiling for games, books, etc. Something like an Ikea Pax with frosted doors, simple and functional for storage. Comments (3)Another alternative would be a soft powder blue -- I put the grey strip in below so that you can see this really is a blue, and not grey. But you could up the colour intensity a bit and still get a lovely, light effect. It looks as though all your furniture would go happily with walls like this if you're not into changing much at this point. But you'd want a different rug and of course different throw cushions. Comments (30)Thank you all for the advice. I have several challenges in my living room. One is it is fairly small, just 20'x18', basically a square shaped room. I don't have the room to pull things away from the walls to make room for floor length drapes. Both walls have the large windows with very little wall space. There is a long handmade country quilted wall hanging that I don't want to clash with any window treatment. The living room is open to both the kitchen and dining room. They are all essentially one room. I can't rearrange the furniture due to the wood stove in one corner and where the TV has to be in that corner. The piano will only fit on that one wall. I do have electric baseboard heaters along the one wall that are used when I go away any time in the cold weather months so having long drapes would be a problem there. Heating with wood makes things get really dirty so I don't want window coverings that are hard or problematic to take down and clean. I am a recent widow and need to be able to take care of things myself. My living room hasn't had a makeover in 30 yrs which is why I desperately need new window treatments. I don't have beautiful hardwood floors like in some of these pictures. I have carpeting. Some day I'd like to replace that but can't right now. I have beautiful views of the pine trees surrounding my home out the windows so don't want the view hidden. I do feel at times now at night, that I'd like a way to close off the windows so people can't see in. I do like a softness around the windows. I'm starting to toy with the idea of a faux Roman shade valance with maybe woven wood blinds underneath which I could then lower for privacy at night. Or just some simple panels but I think I'll have to stay with sill length if I do that due to the electric baseboard heaters and furniture up against walls. You could do a whole wall of TV storage and display that would span the whole DR/ LR wall This is one iidea from Besta from Ikea it can be configured to look custom and and be exactly what you need in your space. Then a sofa and 2 cha
irs would make the most sense.

3 years agolast modified: 3 years agoNot true that a sectional only works well in large rooms. Sectionals can work very well in some tight spaces... offering a good amount of seating in one fell swoop - with a streamlined effect. But a sectional has to be well-measured for any space.
