It is up to the KD- Showplace is obligated to provide specs and answer questions ahead of time. The specs are very clear. IF I were dealing with and did not know what was used to construct the cubby I'd call tech and have an answer in 10 minutes. It certainly sounds like the KD called and asked for a replacement rather than a solution. As I said he should be calling with a possible solution and asking for advice. Faulting Showplace is simply wrong. Attached is a jpeg with a likely solution to your existing problem 1/4" panle trimmed on the front with a "Flat.96" An alternate is decorative end panels but that would involve changing the molding as LWO noted AND you would really want to also have them on the bottom then. I also included one way the cabinet could have been ordered BUT that has other issues. First -dimensions of the wine cubby cannot be altered at all (which is not unusual for that item in most brands. I could order it altered, attached and specify what it was made from and the thickness in a hi end custom brand- at 3 times the cost) So for that solution- extending the sides down the wall cabinets need to be ordered 3" wider than the cubby AND the stile at the sides of the cubby becomes 1-1/2" plus 3/4" or 2-1/4". An alternative is to order the wall cabinet deeper and only 1-1/2" wider- that would hide the outside edge of the cubby. The only other options would have been to do something different (would have been my suggestion); build it completely on site out of parts, or add the panel and the flat as shown in the solution. Note that the solutions to the existing problem OR the alternatives would have cost the OP more money in the first place. The KD is responsible for some accommodation but not the whole ticket. Note that I don't like it either but I can tell you that there will be people who would go "ooh, solid wood, that's great"...one man's ceiling... Well, for $450, it's may not be worth your time and tool investment if you're doing this to save money. If you're doing this because you like projects like this, that's another story. But you will still barely save any money. If you already do have the tools, then you have to be able to cut a REALLY straight line with them. Or it will show in comparison to the cabinets. That means you have to be pretty comfortable with your table saw, or very very consistant with a circular saw and a jig. If you're doing MDF (HEAVY compared to plywood), that's $50 a 4x8 sheet (actually 49"x97") for 3/4" A hand held router will be easier to use, but a table router will give you more consistant results on easing the edges. Are these going to be shaker "panels", or just simple flat panels? There's a whole other bit of complexity to the finished shaker panels than the just the flat panels, and if that's what your'e comparing $$ quotes with, then not just no, but hell no, it's not worth the dollars to make your own.

We are also using Ikea cabinets. On the island and on the bank of base cabinetry that does not reach the walls, we are using doors rather than cover panels. I like the heavier look of the doors and the "furniture" feeling they create. On the pantry cabinets and the banquette we are building from fridge cabinets, we are using furniture legs and leaving an open space underneath - no toekick. This looks nice in a traditionally styled kitchen, but not so great in a smooth, sleek ultra-modern room. If you are doing modern, definitely use the toekick. To get back to your original question...I think that it looks nice when a flat end panel reaches the floor. I don't personally think that cutting out the toekick is attractive. I also doubt that the edgebanding will last any appreciable length of time. Because the surface is flat and resembles the side of the cabinet frame, when you see the end panel echoing the silhouette of the cabinet the mind jumps to the conclusion that it is unfinished and waiting for a cabinet or finishing panel to be attached. In the end though - it's a minor thing and very subjective. You need to proceed with what you believe looks good and will bring you pleasure when you look at it each day. :)

Designov, I visited your post regarding your gorgeous new kitchen and due to the recessed doors that I love since I have been wanting the cabinets that you bought and the crown molding and the overall look, I felt it looked beautiful just the way it was with the matching end panels that were just not door style panels. I felt it looked pretty and finished and gorgeous. Thanks for sharing.
