Front Porch Columns
Help please! I need to replace my front porch columns and railings. The current are rotting. I’d like to replace them with fiberglass or pvc. I need help with a couple of things. First the material. I’ve seen some fences and railings that are very flimsy and shiny. This is why I’m leaning toward fiberglass? I’m really not familiar with my options. The other thing is - column style. I had thought I wanted round but now I’m leaning toward square with raised panels. I just don’t want the columns to be too big for the porch. I can’t find a free software program that will help me use my picture and try out different columns. All ideas appreciated.

Comments (7)I ask because a a brad nailer will not work in composite columns and yours did not appear to be wood from the picture. I do not know if there really is a good way to attached a moulding without making it look like you attached a moulding. Your example picture is a recessed panel look which you would never be able to duplicate. You could potentially add a decorative cap and maybe a base to your columns but that would very well mean taking them down to do it correctly....See MoreFront porch column & rail ideas (industrial style)
Comments (7)Suggest you stop and decide what the entire project will look like, then work to make it happen. Think through all your ideas. Figure out how everything will be done. Looking at the lights for an example. The base should be in the center of the piece of siding. Lap siding is normally installed with butt joints staggered, or the end butts a piece of trim. Comments (4)Just because they may not be primary weight bearing does not mean they aren't helping out, especially the corner post. Home style is so mixed these days it is often very difficult to determine. Your home has some features that look Georgian, but those houses were mostly brick and lacked covered porches. When they did have a porch the columns were round. Nonetheless, I see no reason square posts would not work, just make sure their size is comparable to what you have....See Moremybeachgarden

3 years agoConsider wood columns and railings or something synthetic if you don't want wood. Decking companies might be able to advise you. Something like this (but slimmer columns) would look great with your brick façade.

3 years agoMake sure you match any stone facing to your brick. You might be able to find synthetic columns in a wood finish, do synthetic railing in white but with "wood" tops. Take a look at decking websites for ideas. I've seen a mix of "wood" and white railings. It would be a shame not to take advantage of the red/brown bricks of your house.
