What is eating my sweet potato vine?

Hi all,

First timer here and something appears to be eating my sweet potato vines. Any idea what I can do to prevent it? Thanks so much!

Maybe caterpillars? Have you investigated around the plants and under the leaves?

Looks like leaf stress disorder. That often happens to plants if some environmental condition changes in the extreme when the leaf is about to emerge - eg., suddenly too much or too little water or a big temperature swing from hot to cold or vice versa. Usually it only happens to those leaves that were about to emerge and assuming the conditions settle down, additional new leaves will be fine.

Hi Dianne It looks to me like it might be mole damage, we have those around. The safest way to go is to peel and cut the bad parts, and cook it to be used in meals or freeze. I only save the ones that look blemish free to make slips for spring or eat later. Dianne, hopefully for the next spring party I will have a lot of slips to share with others including the big one, colorette that I got from Echo. And remember the apples in the front yard? One is Thomas Jefferson favorite heirloom apple and the tall one close to the garage is a Pink Lady apple and I let it fruit 2 apples this year and they were good! Silvia

Are you finding fresh damage? It may be that there were pests, but something took care of them.

Also try scratching in the soil around the base of the plants. Some cutworms curl up & hide there during the day, and do their feeding in the nighttime/early morning hours.They start out quite tiny too, and blend in very well, so it can be difficult to spot them.

IMPE, chewing insects leave jagged edges from feeding, while caterpillars leave smooth edges.

Also check for snails/slugs. They can start out quite tiny too and feed @ night/early morning. You can use iron phosphate snail bait pellets that are not harmful to people/pets.
