New house - need window treatment ideas
Comments (19)That is such a beautiful room! I love the cabinet and the coffee table with the blue finish on it! Those are amazingly beautiful windows and during the day are breathtaking, I bet! I am not sure I can really add any suggestions for covering them at night - in our family room, I lived for a year and a half with nothing on the windows and at night it felt creepy - we have woods in the backyard as well but it felt creepy without anything covering the windows. We ended up getting Plantation Shutters - pricey but beautiful and I love them. During the day they let in as much light as you want - at night they completely close and you feel cozy inside without the blackness of the windows. I don't have a pic to post at the moment though. Sounds like you wouldn't want shutters though - it sounds like you want something minimal during daytime....See MoreHow would you treat this window/slider combo?
Comments (13)Thanks for the responses! Amity - thank you for adjusting my photos, I am not a photographer that is for sure. Gray - I agree about no tab tops, seems like thats an invitation to a nightmare. You think it would look ok to have blinds on the windows but not the door? Love your suggestion of Carmel - without seeing my whole room, I must tell you that carmel would look really good in here. Oceanna - I have looked at the JC Penney online site. I can get bogged down looking at inspiration pics, because I like so many of them. That's why in the end, I love to ask for opinions from all of you. So much talent in one place! Amity - did you make your draperies? Have you posted a pic on this forum? I am toying with the idea of sewing these myself, but am scared to try it; thats a lot of fabric to screw up! These will need to be lined, also. Do you think that a lined faux suede will be too heavy for clip on rings? Callaloo - thanks for the visual. I have thought about grommets also. I did wonder if they would hang up, especially if I do lined faux suede. As you can tell - I have zero experience in the window treatment department. One of my concerns is that the width of the windows and the door are not equal. Do you think it will be a non-issue in the end? Would I make both panels equal to the greater width of the windows to make them "appear" to be the same width? Am I totally in over my head and should I just call out the experts? I hate to pay for labor on anything I can do myself!...See MoreWindow coverings for sliders
Comments (20)Cat_mom, you give me too much credit on my kitchen...that was definitely the result of a group effort with the kitchen forum. I actually am quite lacking in the decor department. I always have no idea what to do or where to start, but with a few suggestions I can tell what I like. I don't think I have bad taste (but who does?), but the trouble is I have no creativity or vision. I am very relieved that you all are suggesting doing a WT type for the sliders and the door-sized window, and giving me permission to do something else with the little windows on the side of the room. The thing is my husband really wants to be able to make the room DARK, so I fear bamboo or wood blinds would leak too much light. The original plan was to do blackout cellular shades (which would have to be white to comply with husband) but after seeing the samples, they just seem so papery-plain. What about hanging a slightly patterned sheer over cellulars to soften them and give a translucent option? I could do the same for all of the windows in the room, or I could do the little windows that way, and the big windows with the same sheer, but with an opaque lined curtain instead of a cellular. One last question for now about the big window & slider...if we do cellular shades on them, the sliders would have vertiglide with the grooves vertical, and the big window right next to it would have regular horizonal grooves. Wouldn't that look funny?...See MoreNeed help with Window treatment for Dining Rm
Comments (7)After looking at options for WT for my dining room, I realize that the living room has unique challenges due to the remodel. I replaced 2 slider windows, which I now regret (long story), with one window that is actually 3 windows together - narrow casement windows on both sides of a large fixed window. This room is used solely as a music room. The challenge is the hardware (crank and window lock) on the casement windows. The depth of the window is 2" and the crank takes up more than 1" of the recess. Not a problem for drapes, which would hang outside the window, but limits my options for installing shades / blinds in the window recess. The ceiling in this room is sloped, so hanging WT from the ceiling is not a good option. I would like to have 3 separate shades / blinds that operate independently. Some options: 1) wooden blinds, with a single header across, recessed in the window; stop blinds at bottom of glass - crank will show when blinds are down 2) honeycomb shades, with 3 separate headers; stop shades at bottom of glass - crank exposed when shades are down; use valence across top of window to hide separation between headers 3) honeycomb shades, but use stationary drape panels between windows to "hide" header separations - I think the side windows are too narrow for this. 4) wooden plantation shutters - extend far enough out from the window to leave space for crank and window lock. Problem is that I will be able to tilt, but not open, the shutters on the center fixed window, which will obscure the view and may reduce too much light...See MoreWindows on Washington Ltd
