What bug has destroyed my clematis?!

I've lived in this house over 20 years and have never seen these bugs before. They've sucked the chlorophyll out of all my clematis. I thought they looked like flea beetles but they don't jump when I approach and they're not making holes in the leaves, just sucking them dry. Does anyone know what these are and how to get rid of them??

Looks like either a blister beetle or a vine weevil but it is hard to tell, as it sort of looks like they're sleeping. It might be worth coming out at night with a flashlight and seeing if there is more than one perpetrator.

Whatever it is, it is a sucking insect, not one that chews, so eliminates both blister beetles and vine weevils.

They almost look like black bean aphids but the magnification makes it difficult to judge scale. And it may be something else has disfigured the clem and that is now attracting insects as a secondary problem.

Yeah it is hatching time for all the grubs. You may want to consider treating your yard and soil with Milky Spore to eliminate the grubs if you have a serious infestation of them. If you kill the grubs then the damage done by the beetles is markedly reduced. Organic control will be difficult once they hatch as most organic controls are directed at killing the grubs (Milky Spore and parasitic nematodes). After hatch we are left with row covers, scouting and hand picking them, Pyrethrin-based insecticides, and Neem Oil all of which are only marginally effective. I'm not a pro, but I looked them up in "American Horticultural Society, Pests & Diseases.Looks like Squash Beetle Lavae. The adults will be red with black spots. I've spotted a few adults on my pumkins but it's squash bugs giving me fits! I just returned from picking about 25 from my zucchini and pumpkins and have been doing this about every other day for a week or so. Good luck!

Hello fellow North Carolinian. I can't figure out what critter is eating your SAC from the description. Haven't had an issue with anything eating mine though. Can you post a picture of it? Sevin can be used however to control whatever it is that is eating your plant's flowers. I use for japanese beetle control on quite a few of my plants including crepe myrtles which the jb seem to love!

I have a picture of the bug, but I couldn't figure out how to upload more than one picture. He looks like perhaps some kind of long thin beetle (thinner than a Japanese beetle), more like a longhorn beetle but not exactly the same.
