Can I clean up man-made bog/swamp?
Comments (6)Hmm, that's a real ethical delimma in my opinion. First of all, I'd make sure your pile of soil wasn't put there by beavers and not machines. Secondly, regardless of how it was created, in the meantime I'm certain it has become habitat for wildlife which will certainly be displaced once you "clean it up". I'm reminded of a situation of a real bog in Augusta county virginia. It was a cranberry bog hosting several rare orchids and ferns. Someone bought it thinking that they could "clean it up" and make a resort. All the peat and plants were removed and sand brought in to cover the bottom. Then they added neon colored dinosaurs and waterslides. The irony here is that this was a resort at the edge of a national forest for people who wanted to escape the city and experience nature. While my example involves a natural ecosystem, and is therefore quite different, some of the same lessons still apply. What are your reasons for cleaning it up? If it is purely for recreation, then maybe there isn't anything wrong wth altering it (as long as you don't introduce non-native fish or plants); however if you value the site for its natural and ecological value then you'd be better off either leaving it, or restoring the original stream....See MoreHow can we clean up a kerosene spill on wood?
Comments (13)Here's what we've decided. First try: We sprinkled baking soda and kitty litter on the stain and replaced the mudders' protective paper. We'll sweep up and replace those two things every couple of days for the next few weeks and see what effect it has. If the odor persists that long, we'll try sanding and sealing. If it's still there, we'll bite the bullet and replace the plywood; if it's gone, we won't. We have about 6 weeks till carpeting goes in, so in that time we should have a good idea of what's happening. Thanks for your help!...See MoreHow do I clean up a oil stain?
Comments (4)I know I'm a little late to this party, but I can't help myself: When my brother and I were 2 and 3, we tipped over the gallon can of olive oil in the pantry and amused ourselves until half the can had poured out through the tiny holes our dad had poked in the corners with an icepick...(remember those days?) Olive oil everywhere, slippery as could be. What fun! The oil seeped through the wooden floor boards through to the ceiling of the apartment below. As long as we lived there (another ten years or so) every time the floor got wet it smelled of old olive oil. The oiled parts of the wood got darker and darker, and no matter how much paint the landlord applied to the ceiling below, the stain remained. We are 60 and 61 now, Mom is 85. She reminds us of that day every time she thinks of olive oil, and how she didn't know what to do first - laugh, cry, curse herself for her momentary lapse, or clean up the floor or the kids. I bet the place still stinks....See MorePictures and feedback about DWs NOT next to main clean up sink
Comments (26)At my house the DW is to the left of the sink. It was that way when we bought it. It's awkward, as we are all right handed. Whats worse is that the DW is next to the end of the cabinet run - in fact, it's right next to the corner lazy Susan. So it's a PITA to put dishes away in the upper cabinets above the dishwasher, because there's no room to stand left of the DW. I can't reach the left half of the cabinet with the DW door open, so I have to put the dishes in the counter, close the DW, then put the dishes away. I need to rearrange....See Moreeld6161
