Extension cord under carpet: possible solution?

From my reading, I've learned that running a general purpose extension cord under a carpet is a fire hazard. That's tricky for us apartment/condo dwellers who can't add floor outlets but still need power in the center of a room. I found a product that is specifically marketed for using under a carpet (cited as useful for trade shows). I ordered one and it is extremely heavy duty. I'm thinking about running it under my living room rug to light a lamp and running it in a low/no traffic area. Do you think this is a safe option?
