How to avoid cutting off dining room during kitchen remodel

we live in a split level and the dining room is next to the kitchen, and it is all basically one room, but still clear where the kitchen is.

we are remodeling our kitchen and making drastic changes, one of which being darker cabinets and a blue Black splash (I don’t want design opinions, I know this will look gorgeous and I don’t really care about the person who will buy our House in 30 years).

what I’m wondering is, how do I avoid separating the kitchen and dining into two small rooms? It seems like the dark colors will make the kitchen even more clearly distinct from the dining area, but I don’t want to use dark colors for the dining area or walls. Would it be enough to use a table runner that matched the kitchen Backsplash? The flooring is the same from the dining to the kitchen, so would this be enough? What ideas am I not considering (besides my kitchen design which I am not changing because I love it)?

thanks!
