Still in the possibility in the next 6 months phase, but looking now at floor ideas for our great room.

Hello, Yes we have a 35 x 18 great room of family room and kitchen. The dining room is on the other side of the staircase, but shares the same floor. we would like to update to a scratch resistent and durable floor; we have two dogs, both Huskies.

Thank you steff and riverspots, I saw Cosmos on a yard today. It is gorgeous and was the new favorite of the owner. I also saw some that look a lot like solarius and the colors would work. I discovered that it isn't the mica that I am attracted to, but the quartz pieces in the granite. The person that helped us today thinks I should go somewhere in between Cosmos and Solarius. She feels I need color and some drama. I am thinking about several ones that caught my eye African Fantacy, Niagra Gold, Ivory Coast,Gold and Silver or Galo Ornimental. Anyone have any of these? I was surprised how different the same name could look. There were several examples of Copper Canyon and some were gold and some more of a cream color. I am totally confused. We are going up to Charlotte to look at 6 different places. That will confuse me even more. I am going to go by what many of you have said and spot one and know that "it is the one". (I hope)

Need ideas to make our "great" room functional

Thanks for the feedback! I know a sectional will be limiting, but I can't seem to make anything else work. The doorway to the left is to the kitchen, that isn't moving. Anything I put in front of the window needs to leave a walkway to the door. Same for anything on that wall next to the kitchen. If I put anything there that is not against the wall, it needs to be out enough to have a walkway to the kitchen, which puts it too close to the FP/tv. Moving to a couch and/or loveseat is an option. I just can't seem to make that work. It always looks off balance and odd due to the kitchen doorway needing clearance. It's entirely possible I just haven't found the right combination yet. I would definitely consider adding some recessed lighting. If I end up putting in a built in along a wall, it would definitely need a light above each side. The only light currently in the room is a flush mount ceiling light centered about 3 feet in front of the window at the bottom and a floor lamp next to the 18 inch support column. Hard to make it anything but better from there! Additional thoughts/suggestions welcome! I have a really hard time with stuff like this. Lucky for me I found an app that let's me play with furniture, sure beats drawing it out each time.

lets back up a bit, please not many will be able to look past the stuff. You paint after all else is done. you do not include cabinets from the kitchen nor floors in your design. how much furniture are you keeping? how many use this rooms in what way? will there be a tv? could give us measurements or pics from all directions? so idea on style, colors, etc.? thanks

This refers to Bedroom #2 which you indicated may be for an elderly relative. Your doorway into this bathroom is only 24” which will make it impossible for a wheelchair and difficult for a walker. I encourage you to remove or make more shallow the linen closet so you can enlarge the bathroom access door. Then make the Tub shower combo a Shower with low or no curb and a handheld wand. You never know when you will need this for an elderly relative or an immediate family member who has had surgery/broken leg. Make sure there is enough clearance on the sides of the toilet for grab bars and/or to assist in lifting. It would be simpler for this person to access the bathroom through one door instead of two, especially at night. You could remove the anteroom and make this a simple large bathroom with access door to hall and another access door to bedroom. It seems overly complicated in its current configuration.

part of the world? budget?

Oak has stood the test of ages against both damp and pets. various kinds of vinyl are popular but will never look as nice or hold their value as well. Tile will wear well but also be hard on your body (and cold in winter)...

I have to point out that oak hardwood will be more durable and show scratches less than the engineered/prefinished floors you have. Also, their lighter color will show less wear. This would be my choice.

That said, you are already standing on tile and don’t seem to mind it. You could choose brick or stone flooring.

If you go 'brick' then do yourself a favour and work with brick-look porcelain tile. Brick is a BEAST to clean/seal/wax. There are those who LOVE their brick floors (they usually inherit them with a house = brick was sealed and/or wax by the previous homeowner). And then there are those people who put in brick without any of the right sealants/waxing. They are the one's who HATE their brick....because they realized, too late, the amount of work they take.
