Rudbeckia subtomentosa 'Henry Eilers'

These shots are from the Rotary Gardens in Janesville, Wisconsin. Named after the nurseryman who found it growing in a waste area near an old rail line in southern Illinois. Distinctly different than the species. Introduced in 2003 but it has failed to gain much traction in the Chicago landscape market which seems a bit odd given the upward arc of natives in the landscape. Wondering if anyone out there is seeing this plant in the landscape with any regularity?

Comments (56)They like average moisture with good drainage, mine just had way too much with that drain keeping the soil too wet but I'd planted it there because it was a moist spot and I'd read they like that. They also do well in partial sun. I sowed mine --warm temps in cups with plastic bags on top to keep moist-- in winter in a sunny window but you can sow in spring, they come up in about 10 days or so. Now that you brought it up, I decided sow some more to plant in some spots that get sun for only a few hours and see how they do. mxk3, first year with no blooms is fairly typical for perennials. By the end of the first year you should have a nice sized plants with good root systems though. I imagine keeping them a bit on the dry side in winter further north would be good so make sure it has good drainage. Comments (3)I purchased it in the fall of 2007 and planted it late. It had no problem wintering and grew and bloomed beautifully last summer and is growing well right now. The first winter we had limited snow cover and last winter was extremely cold here with moderate snow cover. It's in a windy site (I'm on the prairie) and has stood up well. Comments (12)I'm so glad your interested in growing the perennial Sunflowers. You'll get more activity from birds and butterflies than you will with the annual varieties. They are all US Natives and can be easily grown from seed, and they make excellent long lasting cut flowers. HELIOPSIS helianthoides "Perennial Sunflower" Blooms July  September, 3-4 feet tall Bright yellow 4" flowers. One of my favorite cut flowers. The gold finches love the seeds. [ HELIANTHUS mollis "Downy Sunflower" Blooms August  September, 20-40 inches tall, Lemon yellow 4" flowers. Downy Sunflower is an attractive plant, whether in or out of bloom. It can be readily distinguished from other sunflowers by the fine soft hairs that heavily cover both the leaves and stems. Native Downy Sunflower is often found growing in colonies and prefers average to rich, well drained soil and full sun. Native sunflowers are excellent nectar food source for butterflies and songbirds. Helianthus microcephalus "Small Wood Sunflower" Blooms August - September, 5 feet tall, Zone 4  8, Habitat - Prefers moist soils in full sun, but is tolerant of drought and light shade. HELIANTHUS grosserserratus "Saw-tooth Sunflower" Blooms August  September, 10-15 feet tall Bright yellow 3" flowers. This Helianthus is a giant.
