A weekend of juxtaposition!

Ann

What a weekend it's been. Independence Day in America right as we've been witnessing so much destruction in our great country. I've just loved watching the celebrations in South Dakota yesterday and DC today. All the wonderfully optimistic talk of our heroes, our accomplishments, our talent, our fortitude, our freedoms, our history, our greatness - I've loved every second of it and the patriotic spirit was wonderful. What a much needed respite from so much of the anti-America propaganda. Thank you to those who support, love, and defend our wonderful and free country, and to the great men and women who protect its citizens. I've so loved the optimism of this weekend and from our nation's leader.

Gee, I knew it looked too familiar. Looks like Donnie & his almost copyright thieves are at it again.

Thieving too close to the insignia of Star Trek's crew of the Starship Enterprise.

https://ravallirepublic.com/news/national/govt-and-politics/article_56d208b2-72d7-529e-86ef-d38fc8e1dd73.html

quoting George Takei from the 2nd page of the linked article (he played Lt Sulu)

"George Takei, an actor who played Hikaru Sulu in the "Star Trek" series and is a vocal opponent of Trump, responded to the tweet by saying, "Ahem. We are expecting some royalties from this...""

[bold is mine]

I need a new phrase for 'you can't make this stuff up'.

Thousands and thousands and thousands gathered all around Boston this afternoon including on boats in the Harbor and Charles River. Celebrating the work that went into the creation of this amazing country and those that continue to defend us. And to be in awe of our greatness. I often wonder at my good fortune of have ancestors who left everything behind to come.to the USA.

This may have been the most impressive of the 5 waves of aircraft. TY DoD.

Lots of videos available, all over social media.

Is that the royal "we"?

This came up back in January. Michael Okuda, the longtime graphic designer and lead designer for Star Trek who designed the Starfleet Command seal, noted that his logo “was intended to be somewhat reminiscent of the NASA emblem.”

I'm a trekkie.

Huge fireworks displays, especially in non-urban, non-suburban areas = a lot of distressed wildlife, some of them to the point of death. Many flee in disoriented terror, becoming separated from their young, birds abandon nests, etc. Of course, Trump and his clueless minions don't consider that -- might interfere with their infantile moment of pleasure. Judging from past experience, they probably even think it's funny... Hey, it annoys "libs".

He is a trooper, Margo! I heard a panelist saying yesterday that the biggest issue Biden will have is competing with Trump's energy and ????. For the life of me I can't remember what the second word she used was, but it was a good choice and was like boldness/non-wishy washy. I'm hoping it will come to me and I'll come back and edit this comment as soon as I think of it. She said these were Trump's two best and strongest qualities and dang, I wish I could remember that word. When she said it, I thought that Biden had none of it. Hopefully, it will come to me and I'll edit later.

ETA: That was quick. I looked up synonyms of bold and her word was "courageous". I thought energetic and courageous were excellent descriptions of Trump's uniqueness and certainly two things Biden isn't. Each man has strengths and weaknesses, but they aren't even close to the same ones.

I was watching the speech at the White House last night when President Trump began talking about the plan for the park filled with famous statues. He started off by saying that there would be a statue of the person who has been horribly vilified the last two years. I started getting sick thinking that he was planning to erect a statue of himself. It turned out he was talking about George Washington. What a relief!

But, I wasn't aware Washington had been so vilified for the last two years.

Ziemia, that's cool that some or all of the air show came to Boston. My husband was watching the news off and on throughout the day, before the DC celebration, and saw and heard some cities were getting a wonderful show of some of the aircraft, earlier in the day.

He simply loved the aircraft show in DC (and the wonderful narration). He talked about it all evening, like details of some of the Lockheed stuff, etc. I thought some of it was very cool looking, like the flat one in the center of your pic.

He couldn't remember either, but my synonym check worked perfectly with an instant, that was it, mind jog.

This type of thing is right in Trump's wheelhouse. It's all show and no substance. He can give a speech that someone else wrote and provide a big theatrical display of glory and power. He doesn't understand the history that he spoke about beyond the superficial. He understands it at the same level a grade school student understands it. So-and-so did a big thing and deserves to be in a history book and have a statue to commemorate him. He can't tell you anything more than that.

What does he even know about government under Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, and Roosevelt? Does he know the problems they faced and how they approached those problems? Of course not or he'd learn from them. He knows this:

Washington was our first president and he chopped down a cherry tree. He could not tell a lie. What a loser. He should've lied!

Jefferson had something to do with the Declaration of Independence. I would love to see my signature on that! It'd be bigger than John Hancock's, and in Sharpie!

Lincoln was born in a log cabin. He freed the slaves and was shot in a theater. Where was the Secret Service? They should've been fired! I have the best Secret Service of any president!

Roosevelt was a Rough Rider. Hey, Mike, what's a Rough Rider?

"Idiot intensity"? That was the phrase DH coined to describe the typical demeanor of the dumbest cat I've ever owned or known (and I've known a lot of them), who was unfailingly resolute, bold, and determined, even when whatever he was doing was stupid and ill-considered to the nth degree. He never hesitated either.

Regarding Biden's memory issues though, my whole family calls it a "Biden moment" when we're talking and suddenly can't remember where we were in a conversation. Just the other day, I was on the phone with one of my kids and said "You won't believe the stupid thing I did at the grocery store today". They immediately laughed and said, "Oh no, not a Biden moment". To which I said "Yup".

abh: ...still standing with the American people.

And that's the problem right there. Not the first time you've said it either.

*I* am one of the American people. Even the suggestion that, just because I disagree with trump and criticize him for what he does, means I am *not* American is despicable. Just because I and so many other people, democrats *and* republicans, don't support the president doesn't mean we don't support our country, its people, and the Constitution that protects us from those who would do us harm, domestic and foreign.

It is wrong to imply that.

It is the core of the divisiveness in this country. Your comments just perpetuate it.

donald trump is *not* America. *We* are. All of us.

They are uplifting to his supporters because he voices the dark side of humanity that they embrace. It is a battle cry. Look how he has managed to convince folk that the majority of Americans are anarchists / socialists ( that is a real head scratcher ) who want to destroy America...and judging by comment here they really believe it therefore his words are "inspiring" to them.

Trump uses bombastic rhetoric and his supporters believe every word. He is setting the stage and they fall for it everytime. If they would only look at how many times he has betrayed American values and norms then convinced them he is doing it because he is a patriot. What a joke. The only person he is loyal to is Trump.

Burning a flag incites outrage yet mishandling of the Covid pandemic is ignored. A symbol of the country is valued over the actual persons who are the country.

I spent the holiday reading newspaper articles on the Covid surges in Arizona and Texas - Houston in particular. Florida as well.

I wasn't much in a celebratory mood.

As Coronavirus Slams Houston Hospitals, It’s Like New York ‘All Over Again’

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/04/us/coronavirus-houston-new-york.html

As Houston’s hospitals face the worst outbreak of the virus in Texas, now one of the nation’s hot zones, Dr. Bakshy and others are experiencing some of the same challenges that their New York counterparts did just a few months ago and are trying to adapt some lessons from that crisis.

Like New York City in March, the Houston hospitals are experiencing a steep rise in caseloads that is filling their beds, stretching their staffing, creating a backlog in testing and limiting the availability of other medical services. Attempts to buy more supplies — including certain protective gear, vital-sign monitors and testing components — are frustrated by weeks of delays, according to hospital leaders.

Houston mayor warns hospital system close to "overwhelmed" by COVID spike

Washington — Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner warned Sunday that his city's hospital system is close to becoming "overwhelmed" with patients amid a spike in confirmed coronavirus cases.Texas is one of 40 states that is experiencing a spike in coronavirus cases and has put plans for a phased reopening of its economy on hold. Turner said that in Houston, one in four people who are tested are testing positive for the coronavirus, up from a rate of one in 10 people just a month ago.

"This virus is an equal opportunity abuser. It will inflict anyone who comes in close proximity with it," Turner said. "Now it's having a [disproportionate] impact on people of color. And right now, it's especially within the Hispanic community. But we are having young people being impacted as well."

You guys ----- THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT HE WANTS -- for Americans to be at each others' throats. And you guys keep falling for it, time & time again, while all manner of bad deeds continue behind the scenes.

Divide & conquer, it gives him cover to keep right on going w/ his madness; that all's well, everything is hunky-dory.

Folks who can think for themselves already know what's what & how they'll vote in Nov.

No one is changing anyone's mind here so WHY BOTHER?

I'm blessed to live near the Beach; I celebrated yesterday w/ a gorgeous late afternoon swim & will do the same today. I'm masked bicycling there & observe at least 6-8 ft. distance, on the Beach & in the water.

Big lungfuls of fresh air at the ocean are the best medicine I know. Happy 5th everybody ;>)
