Tired of red front door, need suggestions
Comments (32)Wow, my head is spinning with all these awesome ideas. Annie I love those colors, especially the first group with the teal. What about the teal door as shown in the 2nd from the right sample and the color next to it (in the middle) for my shutters? It's darker than my house, but not too dark. Or Tibbrix's Woodcliff lake for the shutters? Also like that brick color. The more I think of it, I'm ready to get rid of the blue shutters, but keep a blue, be it a teal or the Hudson Bay for the door. And again keep the shutters similar in color to the house, but a shade or two darker. Tibbrix, are you saying do the shutters and door the same blue, such as the Hudson? That's also a thought. I could start with the door and just keep going. I'm also all for doing the work for the long-term changes, just have a hard time visualizing. Can you tell me what color you specifically are referring for the trim? It's not as dark as the door or my roof, right? Would I paint my garage door the beige that is my house color? crl, love that rug. That's why I'm so drawn to the blues, accessories are beautiful....See MoreSo Tired of All the Mistakes - Not Loving my New Kitchen - HELP
Comments (24)The cabinets have a fair amount of variation, but having stained a fair amount of wood with a lot of preparation, I can tell you that sometimes that is in the wood you have chosen and difficult to compensate for. I don't know what you chose, what you were expecting or what you were told you could expect -- or whether the wood choice might be one that will deepen over time. Whatever it is, I see it, but it looks like wood variation and doesn't bother me in the photos. The main thing I'm seeing is the pendants. I love the fixtures. Seeing one was great, but I wondered what else was happening -- then I scrolled down and saw four. Even though I love the fixture itself, when looking at the kitchen as a whole, my eye keeps being pulled up to these white and lots of lines spots and it becomes very distracting. Maybe they can be dropped down a bit so you see them more against the cabinets and not the ceiling. Or maybe paint the ceiling? Or maybe it's not an issue in the room -- just something to think about. I think painting a color or paneling the back of the island might be a good idea. To me, the glass tile looks good. I thought is was the floor tile that was too close and yet not a match to the cabinets. Then I looked at just the cabinets and floor -- maybe Kayl is right -- it's the fact that you have cool tones in the glass tile and everything else is warm. I like that green glass, so I'd be hesitant to change it, especially before seeing how everything comes together. That's something you might be able to accessorize to help balance everything. Worst case, the splash is easier to change once everything is done than most elements. Keep in mind that my comments are looking for issues because you brought it up. My first reaction was not one of horror. You still have a kitchen most folks would be thrilled with. During installation, we look at every detail with a critical eye and not as we will when we are living in the room. Some of the things that look awful in the rough look great when it is all put together (often an issue with tile in progress). I'd have someone look at your concerns in person so you eliminate things like camera and monitor issues. Accessories, even light bulb changes, can help you pull the things you love together. Think of it as needing some finishing detailing -- not a lot of major mistakes....See MoreHelp with paint color suggestions for parent's kitchen refresh!
Comments (18)Maybe two-tone? Paint some but not all? I really agree with everyone else that the worst thing in that kitchen is the backsplash. And painting all the cabinets is just SO much work -- by you or by someone you pay a lot of money to do all that work. It just seems like better bang for your buck to lose the backsplash and keep some or all of the cabinets as they are. When you take more pictures, can you please take pictures of all the cabinets? I wonder if it's just that there are too many cabinets overall that are making the stain tone especially overwhelming. Especially in kitchens the age of your parents', people tended to just fill every nook and cranny with identical cabinets. No variation, and no breathing room. Today, we are favoring fewer cabinets -- especially fewer uppers -- and cabinets with mixed finishes, etc. to make our kitchens less like a cabinet showroom and less claustrophobic. I wonder if there is a bank of uppers you can remove and replace with art or a window that would make a bigger difference than just painting everything white. I'm also wondering how much the lighting is contributing. Could swapping out very yellow bulbs for cooler-colored lighting help? I'm just wondering how overwhelming that cabinet stain would be if half of it at eye-level (the uppers) disappeared, the lighting was cooler, and the wall/counter colors actually toned it down a bit....See MorePlease help! Comments (11)I think it will be easiest to find a pale sage since it is almost a neutral but it needs to be lighter than the stone. A grey blue might blend into the stone too much but that nearly navy with bright white trim had a nice contrast with the stone. Possible a golden tan or buttercream would work if the stone has some yellow undertones....See Moreapple_pie_order
