I have to ask why?

Having lived in the area for 20 years, there has been little concern about water quality. I mean I have an undersink filter. And I even use it to fill a Brita which is complete overkill.

Are you going to be on a well? Even still, there is very little industry in the area to be concerned about. This isn't Flint, MI by any stretch. There is no fracking in the area.

At some point, have nearly 50 inches of annual rainfall and large reservoirs means the water quality is not usually an issue.

Most medical experts do not recommend RO. And those recs are for people who potentially have terrible water. ROing good water would be even a worse risk/benefit.

But you might know something I don't for sure. I think that parts of NC have potential water quality issues including near Wilmington and Fayetteville. Obviously we have a lot of researchers here and so get under some level of higher scrutiny. Many of those folks live in the Cary/Apex water treatment area so you can imagine the local level of awareness. And I know of few who go to the extremes that you are talking about.

@David Cary thanks for your reply! I’ve done a lot of reading as a new to NC homeowner. Just concerns with the Cape Fear River and surrounding water supply. Cary and Apex water has been shown to have PFAS from Duke testing. Just trying to set our young family up for success long term with Young developing kids to take care of. These chemicals in the water cannot be good for us. I agree with demineralizing water and removing minerals our bodies need. We do plan to add the calcium and magnesium back in as best we can. May I ask why you decided to have an under sink filter? We will not be on well but on city water. The whole house concern mainly comes from bathing and just not enough knowledge on what these chemicals can do through our skin. Maybe fear mongering- but I’ve read many accounts of skin itching, odd cancers developing in people locally and just trying to figure out a solution of some safety if I can find a reasonable one.

I would never live anywhere without my own additional system. US water infrastructure is aged, really costly, no way to upgrade and companies maintaining it have all the incentives to cheat on expensive treatment chemicals. Our area water contaminants - heavy lime. Dishwashers, washers, showers, water heaters all get severely damaged.

Saying all of that: start from not Kinetico high pressure sales, but get Your water tested. You state may have the state labs that can tell you with high certainty what is in your water.

After you get the results, Your results, you can objectively select a treatment. Or may be you get very lucky no treatment will be needed. No point of having expensive PFAS treatments - if you do not have them in your water.

Sorry you misunderstood what I said. Not "does have them": get your water tested to know exactly how much ppm and what it has. You should not be deciding on a treatment without knowing the facts. I would only trust an independent lab water test.

We do not get our water from the Cape Fear River. Nearby - sure. But Wilmington/Brunswick county is the real issue. It does appear that the majority of the local issue is short chain which is supposed to be better. My wife is an avid EWG reader and we briefly considered RO but decided against it.

Our system is not old and decaying in Cary/Apex. This is a wealthy and rapidly growing area. The infrastructure is pretty new. .

I am not sure that you can test your own personal water for things like PFAS. Ppm is not the issue but ppt - parts per trillion.

The fact that Duke looked at our water supply tells you something. Duke (and NCSU and UNC) are all over any thing in the area.

Have you looked at how much energy a whole house RO would use?

I just figured basic filtration is a good idea. Tastes a little better and removing some chlorine seems like a good idea.
