What do you think of this one?

Have you considered marble slab? Very simple and there are so many types. Black slate is also a good choice since it is very neutral. Also, what are you doing with the mantel?

I don't think the oak mantel goes with the wood floors. Do you mean you are going to paint the mantel the same as your trim color (off white)?

What is your style and what is in the rest of the room? A photo of the room would help. I'm not fond of the one you've chosen. I wouldn't want anything with that much pattern as it could get coated in soot, etc. A travertine brick would be nice, but we could better advise if we saw the room and furnishings.

@hansen - yes, we are going to paint the mantel off white.

@acm - yes, I realized I contradicted myself - my tile isn’t simple. Lol. I’m getting desperate. it has actually been years since we installed the wood floors! I like that tile but worry it’s too much/busy. But really Want to get this finished.

@designgirl - below are some photos of the room. Going to paint the bookcase off white as well. And sand and stain the table a different color. and paint the chairs black.

Oh, and I forgot to mention....I’m in so Cal and fireplace is gas with ceramic logs and rarely gets used. so no soot. 😁

And every travertine I find has a pink undertone. Grrrr

and I don’t want brick on the floor.

IMO the FP is the least of the issues that huge wall unit is eating up valuable space and I am pretty sure most of what is there could find another home. As for the FP stain the surround and the mantel to match the floors and be done. I don’t think the tile needs changing and BTW you do need the hearth with a gas FP so if you have some flooring left over remove the hearth and feather in the floor

Yes, I know it’s very large. best solution I could find for birds and books and china that can’t go anywhere else in our small home. That’s why I‘d like to paint the same color as the wall to try to minimize it’s impact a bit. We have a lot of books. open to suggestions that don’t involve getting rid of our books. My children read them and I‘m glad for that!

Can you please help me understand your comments about the fireplace? The surround is currently tile so it can’t be stained. And it’s pinkish so it needs to go. And we do want tile on the floor. It’s currently cement as our home is on a slab.

remove the hearth? Feather in the floor?

A hearth is still required when you have a gas log installed in a wood burning fireplace.

By hearth do you mean the flooring in front of the fireplace? We want to put tile there. it’s currently cement.

Have you considered just painting the existing tile the same color as the mantel. Easy fix and would look nice. Can you bring the flooring up to the fireplace? If it needs to be tile for code, I might use black, perhaps black slate, which would tie to the black painted brass and dining chairs. If you want to replace the exiting tile, you might consider black slate or, to keep it light, ivory beige marble tiles or slabs in a matte finish on the fireplace and hearth. Also, porcelain offers many color and pattern options today and can look amazingly like marble without the issues of marble and would be pretty in matte finish slabs around the fireplace and hearth area. On a separate note, have you considered painting the top portion of the large wall unit the same color as the trim? That would really brighten the space without removing storage.

Don’t paint tile...the finish will not last unless. Because this room seems to have so many uses, I would keep the fireplace as simple as possible with a plain gray slate surround and hearth to work with the dark flooring.

I vote with felizlady. Plain grey slate will work for the surround and the hearth. And yes, paint the mantle but not a white/white. Be careful to choose the right white for the rest of the house.

I really want a cream tile with a yellow undertone. Looked everywhere and can’t find it. Was hoping the Houzz community might have some suggestions where I could find it. I’m sorry if I wasn’t clear in my post!

There’s no other gray in my home so it won’t connect with anything. And the cement is gray right now and I don’t like that. I love my creamy walls and would like the tile to be creamy too.

If you don’t have a tile store nearby you could try an online retailer like Wayfair. See attached as an example.

@flomangan - how did you search to find that tile? I tried to search using cream tile and Crema tile and couldn’t find what you did or any other contenders....

@lisa gee - Try putting Emser Tile and Daltile in the search bar and then selecting floor tile. It will run through the options. I think her choices above were from Emser and Daltile.

I was able to find the tile she posted but wanted to search for others. Since searching for creme and crema didn’t show hers I was wondering how she found it.

Lol. You might be able to see the difficulty I am having. most have beige or pink undertones. hard to find an ivory or cream.

@lisa gee - It is hard. I certainly wouldn't want a pink undertone, but beige would be fine.

I’m really trying to get away from the ”dirty” undertones so that’s why I’m wanting a yellow undertone ivory / cream without brown or pink undertones. I’ve ordered 7 samples from tilebar. Hopeful! Thank you so much for that resource. I knew the Houzz community would help me! crossing fingers!
