Design Dilemma Windows

DH all around or mix with casements and awnings?

About to replace all windows with black Marvin elevate...house takes a beating from the sun since there is no tree cover. Trying to move away from colonial look to a more modern farmhouse aesthetic. Can I mix it up or would it look odd..I do not want grilles on the windows. I’ve played with renoworks but can’t seem to decide.

Without extensive working this house is never going to be modern. Stick with double hung everywhere for consistency. To escape the 90's I would eliminate the big arched window over the entrance and the quarter circle windows in the rear and replace with windows that match the rest of the house.

Thank you for your honesty. I understand that I’m stuck with some original design/build flaws but just hoped that new black windows could spruce it up a bit and complement the 3yr old roof

LOL! Sounds real familiar to me. We have been RVing since 1996. Lately Dean doesn't want to drive it. It's alot of work. Yes, we've had the Awning come unraveled. We've had steps knocked off twice. A broken Jack. Two blowouts at different times. One that cut the propane line. (We both smoke.) I prefer to stay were there is electric and cable. LOL! Real Camping. But, we do park at the Lake with Senior Discount of $9.00 a night. Can't beat that. A two week stay for $126.00. Makes it worth while to do all the loading and unloading.

We went through the Andersen/Pella/Marvin//fiberglass/generic decision process long ago and decided to go with the Andersens because the company has a reputation for standing by their product, they looked fine to us, plus both the contractor and architect recommended them. But now that it's time to order the units, we realize that we have never seen casement or awning 400-series windows with vinyl interiors. We've been to multiple Home Depots multiple times, to two different "WindowRama" places that have pretty good selections of Andersen (and other) models to look at, and also went to an Andersen "super showroom." We've seen and carefully decided on what we want for the 14 double hung windows that we are putting in, and are not too worried about the eight clerestory awnings because they will be so high. There are nine casements, and the five that will be at eye-level in the kitchen are a major concern. As eastbay10 rightly indicates, we dearly want to avoid disaster, and if we can't see the units in person we're thinking we will have to get unfinished pine and paint them ourselves; that's time and expense we'd rather avoid. We're not looking for GardenWeb to make the decision for us, but thought it was worth a shot to see if anyone had any experience they could share with us.

Good advice in the 2 posts above. The Integrity is a solid choice, and any Marvin product is as good as you'll find with a real wood interior. Wood is what it is, so there will always be the question of WHEN, not IF it will ultimately degrade, but with proper maintenance the two Marvin options should have a good lifespan. As WoW alluded to earlier, the Sunrise (or any premium vinyl) will generally offer superior performance (better u-values and air leakage), a lower price, better warranty, and less maintenance, but the appearance factor is more important for some, and wood can't be beat in that area. Regarding the installation company, you would vet them just as you would another window company, look at things like review sites, history, do they have a physical location, references, view their work, BBB, trade affiliations, etc, etc.

They are more expensive. That is probably the single most contributory factor to their lack of popularity in new neighborhoods. Many folks don't care for the interior screen as well. Combination of factors, but cost is certainly one of them.

Maybe this will provide you with more inspiration. I don't think you can get to a Farmhouse style, but you can certainly update the appearance to make it appear Classic Modern for lack of a better description.

I like the idea of a single vertical line on the DH vs no grilles at all to mitigate the black hole look. If I eliminate the 1/4 rounds in the back, should I enlarge the picture window or wall it off completely?

I think installing transom style windows in place of the 1/4 rounds would unify the look with what's over the doors below. The stalagmite trees and mushroom hedges at the entrance were probably originally part of the formal look, but they have outgrown their welcome and your home would benefit from a reno on the landscaping. That's where you could loosen up the formality of the architecture which you're stuck with.

Keep in mind that a window opening for an archtop is framed as a rectangle and made to fit the arch with plywood or something like that.

If the archtop opening is 60" to the top of the arch, very easy to put a 60" rectangle. Exterior siding and/or trim will have to be adjusted.

I agree that will modernize your exterior and also solve some window covering issues that you may have.

There are some smaller windows that could be casement. I like the functionality of casement. When I replaced my double hung, I put in a casement. So much easier to open it up reaching over a sink.

I don't know it you considered six pane over one. These are casement, but you would never know it.

East bay 10...i like the idea of squaring off the 1/4 rounds but unsure how it will look with a full sized window above each door...I plan to put rectangular 2w1h on all front DH but was going to leave the back plain. Should I put muntins on those 2nd story great room windows?
