Just an example:

That stencil design is very busy, and that you want to do it in those blocks you have taped off is incredibly hectic.

That design will make people feel intense and pressured and want to get out of that that room as fast as they can.

Now, if you will be entertaining relatives and you want them to leave right away, you will have achieved that goal.

Generally, that is the opposite of what one wants to achieve in a dining room.

Part of the problem is that room is small, and and all over stencil would be overwhelming.

You can get a glorious hand-knotted carpet in vibrant colors and some great art for the walls.

If you don't want art that actually depicts things, there is marvelous calligraphic art.

If your living room is large, Royal Design Studio has some marvelous stencils that can be applied to the walls.

Their catalog shows the stencils in contrasting colors to the walls.

It is more tastefully subtle when the stencil is in the same color family and the stencil is slightly darker than the wall.

The other way around looks a bit chalky.

Your walls are textured and stenciling on a textured wall never looks good. If you want a strong geometric design on the wall I would suggest you get a bold wallpaper like one of the ones Beverly shared above and make sure it is installed over a good wallpaper liner so the texture on your wall doesn't come into play . If you're not willing to wallpaper then paint the wall black and do large modern art.

@Design Interior South I actually skim coated my powder bath wall and did a Moroccan stencil there for my first project so yes I learnt the hard way :)

Actually, in a powder room that's quite okay, you can go crazy in your powder room and do things there you wouldn't do elsewhere where people really look at the walls for a longer period of time.

You did a great job stenciling, too.

Imran, if you did that bathroom, you know plenty!

You know, we all really did know a lot when we were children.

Then we got older and lost confidence in ourselves and told ourselves we had no talent and/or no taste, or worse, other people told us that about ourselves.

So we have to get back to our earlier selves and we can educate ourselves too.

And get rid of any negative messages we got from mean grown-ups along the way.

Look, if Jack the Dripper (Jackson Pollock) could sell art worth beaucoup bucks that any kindergartner can do, there is hope for us all!

OP, your stenciled bath is amazing. If you are thinking of a patterned or textured rug, you might want to start with that, or at least browse through some online rug sites. I fall in love with rugs, then want to build around them. I find it hard to select a complimentary rug to an already done room.

You have a patterned table and busy flooring. I think the pattern on the wall will be too much - what are you trying to covey?
