Help! Can light placement, need help asap! Xpost
Comments (11)Good point, bbtrix, but relying on the pendants isn't a big deal to us. We're re-using the existing pendants with 75 W halogen bulbs (will likely switch to LED when they burn out). They put out a lot of light. We started out with 100 W halogen to replace 100 W incandescent and they were waaay too bright. Anyhoo, I prefer a mix of lighting from cans, UCL and pendants and the ability to use all or only some of them, depending on what's going on in the kitchen. And dimmers for all, of course. I just talked to my KD. She had designed the cans to be 54" OC (wasn't marked on my plan so I forgot this) so moving those 2 cans to the other side of the joist is only about 3" beyond that, putting their final location closer to her plan than their current placement of 48" OC. We can get away with slightly wider placement between cans because we have 9' ceilings. I'd forgotten about that when I was stressing over this yesterday. = ) I'm happy with this decision. I really didn't like having the 4" and 6" cans so close together in that one spot, plus I know for sure that moving the bottom can out a few inches will definitely provide light to that side cab. It's because of "the wall is open, this is in the way, what do you want to do, we need to know now" situations that I planned and planned and planned all the other details so I'd have to make as few on-the-spot decisions as possible. So far, so good (thank you, thank you, kitchen remodel gods!). ... I've read this sentence several times and can't quite fathom your concern: "At this point though, it looks like the cans by the range are the concern." Is it because it's not centered on the hood? Or for another reason? But to answer your question, I am ok with it, as is hubby. I thought he'd have a problem with it because it's not centered on hood (he can be a little OCD about that kind of stuff) but he's not bothered by it in the least. My new kitchen will be lighted better than my current kitchen, which is lighted better than it was when built 21 yrs ago, simply because we switched from incandescent to halogen bulbs. When I think back to how poorly lit all my childhood kitchens were.... My grandmother's kitchen had a light over the sink, a light over the range and a central ceiling light for a room that was 18'-20' square. How on earth did we never slice off a finger while making a meal?...See MoreHelp.. ASAP! Grout Color for Tile
Comments (10)It is very difficult for us to choose a grout color because everyone's monitor reads color slightly differently. Plus if you took the photo in one light it would look one way and if you took it in another light it would look a different way. The best suggestion is to look at it in all different lights noting each time of day which you prefer....See MoreTile Grout help needed ASAP
Comments (9)That is the problem we have offshore tile mfg's making these sheet mosaics with grout lines that are too big for unsanded and too small for sanded. What you have to do is a double pass or pound that grout in tight to avoid it shrinking back and cracking. If your tile person needs to do small batches on a shower pan get another tile person. You have to let your floor dry to determine if the color is consistent. You can see by the drain it is darker. When a person grouts a floor if they over wash the grout they take out the color. Let the floor dry. What they can do is use a stiff bristle brush and go over the grout lines what that will do is expose the grout underneath and even out the tone throughout the floor. You will see the grout change as you brush. Obviously do it lightly. Then when you seal it will again help even it out. That said cementitious grouts will always show darker when wet. Saker grouts show this even more. Another problem is mosaic tiles are hard to clean out all the thinset between the tiles. Id the tile person does not do this those spots will always look darker. Put a fan in there to dry it out. use a stiff bristle brush across the entire floor. Use a sponge to wipe off the floor. Rinse that sponge constantly as you will be pulling off the grout dust. Let it dry and then seal. It will look 10x's better. There is no reason yet to dig out anything or use any other product. You will expose the true color with brass brush and a little elbow grease. LET IT DRY FIRST!! Beth is correct that Mapei grout does eliminate any color issues but also has its drawbacks on a floor....See MoreNeed a bit of help SW main house colors ASAP :-)
Comments (11)The cabinets are all being painted white or a shade of white-ish.... unfortunately I picked a carpet 7 months ago - and didn't think through the entire house of colors - hence why I am irritated with the developer designer for not even recommending this website to me - never heard of it until 6 weeks ago. I prefer sea glass tones of color and this is where a gray based carpet would have been a better option. But too late now....See MoreJJ Smith
