July 2019 Building A House
Comments (215)I went over to our build site yesterday and I have to say, I was a little disappointed in the progress. I think I have to just get over it, though. :) They are drywalling and mudding and I really wanted it to ALL be done and it is not. I know this is time intensive, especially considering all my windows are drywall return, so I am trying to be grateful that what is done looks great but I wanted more. How selfish of me! On the bright side, it is amazing how much different the space looks at each step. Framed walls were amazing, I could feel the house taking shape. Insulated interior walls were fascinating, the immediate warmth and quietness they brought to the space, it was such a cozy, blanketed feeling. Now the drywall, and I could walk around and really use the space. It became so much easier to move to thinking about paint colors. I have to really work that list....See MoreApril 2020 Building a Home
Comments (468)NKay I am hoping I’ll get to work at home more in the future and understand that Ethernet is more secure and possibly faster than WIFi. I put Ethernet hook ups in a lot of different rooms so I won’t have long wires laying around as trip hazards. Even though we’ll have a study, I know I’ll want to sit with my computer at the kitchen island so we had wire run there that will come up through a hollow island leg. Make sure Ethernet wiring does not run parellel to electrical wiring (it causes interference). we hard-wired for picture lights where we plan to build bookcases, but since then I found out it wasn’t really necessary to hardwire as so many of the nice fixtures are battery operated now. My builder suggested 2 exhaust fans in several of our bathrooms ... I had him order the new NuTones with the antibacterial UV light/regular light and fan to go near each toilet and a regular exhaust fan/light outside of the shower to prevent humidity build up/mold. Decided to use part of my entry guest coat closet for my main cable box/router. The builder also put some hook ups in around the house to amplify the WiFi throughout the house. Also hooked up special exterior security lights that we can turn on/off from 1st floor and the 2d floor MBR. Hook up for under counter fridge (in case we later want one) in 2d floor laundry room. Hope some of these ideas are useful to you. Know we probably forgot stuff. I forgot wall plug for Dustbuster in the pantry. No matter how much we plan, it’s never enough....See Morenew construction - couple questions/concerns as we near the end
Comments (12)We have an upstairs hallway similar to yours and we don't have vents in our hallway. Ours was also a new build and we have been living in it for 3 years and I have not noticed the hallway being hotter than the other rooms. The only room I noticed being hotter is the guest bedroom that faces southwest and that room is only hotter when the door is closed during the summer months. Your AC system may not have the appropriate load capacity for your sized home if you're noticing a large difference in the air temperatures. Edited to add: the woodwork looks bad. I wouldn't close until all of it is replaced per your approval. Also edited to add: check the thermostat temperatures on the first and second floor. We had to adjust the upstairs thermostat to cool 1 degree lower than the first floor because we have a 2-story foyer and staircase and the thermostat on the second floor was reading the temperature on the first floor and not kicking in when they were both programmed to the same temperature....See MoreSeptember 2020 Building a Home Thread
Comments (541)@lynnheins, I am so sorry about your roof! Gosh, that sucks! We are having a roof issue, too, that the builder says is a non-issue. It only shows for a brief period of the day when the sun is at a certain position.... His response was, “It comes from the sun hitting it on just the right angle and shows up any tiny bit of irregularity on the sheathing. It seems it happens more with unfinished areas as the temp change makes it condensate more when the sun hits the top side and the bottom is still cold. I’m not sure there is anything we can do with it but we will look at it.” Ugh....See Morebytheriverbank
