I think my Winecraft Cotinus has Verticillium Wilt

Hello Fellow Houzz Hublets,

I'm reaching out today because I believe my beautiful winecraft cotinus has Verticillium Wilt per Dr. Google. I've treated it with Immunox but various sites indicates there is little hope.

My two questions are:

1. Take a look at the attached picture and see if you concur with my diagnosis

2. If I end up having to replace, is a Loropetalum susceptible to the same disease? Apparently the fungus lives in your soil for years and you should not replant with same shrub.

Is there any hope for my current baby or is it hospice time??

Feedback is always appreciated.

That does not look like verticillium wilt. If that were the case, entire branches would appear wilted and dead (if not the entire plant), not just a few random leaves with brown patches.

It looks a bit more like transplant shock, which is still a possibility even after about 6 weeks. Just keep it well watered but do not over do it.

btw, there is NO treatment for VW so don't bother with the Immunox.....it won't do any good at all.

how long has it been planted ...

how did you plant it ...

were there any late frosts or freezes .. where are you.. big city name ..

is that one stem buried in the soil??? .. the one at 2 oclock from the tag ...

@ken_adrian Adrian MI cold Z5 I live in the Annapolis MD area and I planted her ~6 weeks ago. It was doing fine and even developed the 'smoke'. Fast forward to this week and I notice suddenly she's not doing so well. This was after noticing my two Crepe Myrtles had powdery mildew. I had installed all new landscaping and have watered somewhat frequently.

frankly.. the pics look like my garden.. after the first hard frost ... i do NOT grow most of the plants you ask about... but i do have a smokebush .. it is deciduous up here.. so browning leaves in november.. isnt all that surprising... frost is a weird creature.. able to hit a whole plant.. or just parts of the plants.. especially in an over-stuffed garden .... frost would also answer why otherwise evergreen plants for your zone might be affected .... there is a website that tracks temps by zip code ... but i dont have the link .... see link but i think you are on the right track ... its november... its not really time to be FIXING things with chemicals.. or jumping to conclusions about removal .. personally i would wait until spring and see what develops .... one other oddity.. is that in your otherwise.. presumably healthy garden.. a bunch of diverse plants.. get a weird malady.. overnight.. again.. bringing me back to frost .... the odds of such is astronomical ... but for wild temp swings .... good luck ken Here is a link that might be useful: it popped into my head

Pictures would help but often it is difficult to accurately diagnose VW without cutting into the wood or via a plant pathologist. Catalpas are rather prone to VW and if present, there is not much hope for the tree. However, VW doesn't spread like the flu so there is little chance other susceptible species will contract the disease unless the pathogen is transferred mechanically, like with infected pruners or other garden tools. Keep your tools and pruners clean and disinfected and avoid any sort of mechanical injury to the other plants (including root disturbance) and try to ensure no other stressors are present like drought or poor drainage, etc. They should be fine. Take samples into your local extension service for an accurate diagnosis as to the problem.

If it was just a few of the branches I would say to prune them out and reduce watering (I know - it's been so rainy...) and maybe it would limp along. But if most of your tree is afected, it's probably not going to survive :-( This has been an awfully rainy summer, and Cotinus requires very well drained soil if it is going to have a chance of avoiding V. wilt. Sorry!! It is such a nice tree that it is a shame to lose it! BP

Reading in "Geraniums The Complete Encyclopedia" by Faye Brawner, I read that there is no way to get rid of Verticillium Wilt, only precaution in the form of keeping utencils clean and not using dirt that has been from a place where the fungus disease is present (like vegetable gardens where 'susceptible melons, cucumbers, and tomatoes are the three of many'. My question is--has anyone had any kind of success with ridding a pelargonium from this disease? One of the symptoms will be leaf wilting even when the soil is damp--sometimes only on one stem. This is not a symptom I am noticing. But another symtem I notice is a wedge-shaped yellowing followed by an entire leaf turning yellow and dieing. What makes me so suspicious is that so many of the leaves that turn yellow start out with this wedge-shaped yellowing. I noticed this last summer. The plants have been kept outside during the day and in the garage through the nite all winter (escaping frosts). I didn't think too much about the cituation, as only a leaf or two every now and then on all the plants would need to be removed. Now that I've read about the wedge-shaped yellowing symtom--I'm worried. This disease is suppose to be easily transferred to other plants by bugs, etc. I understand that the disease affects the cellular structure of the plant--so cuttings would contain the disease. I would like to think that the author doesn't know it all--and that someone here would know more. Pat

@gardengal48 (PNW Z8/9) I did trim away quite a few dead areas. I will keep my fingers crossed. @ken_adrian Adrian MI cold Z5 was asking about frosts and we've not had any in the area. The confusing part is that it was doing relatively well and then not so great. I'm wondering if it's a watering issue as it's near the house and maybe not as good about watering. We have had precipitation every week and sometimes several days though.

If you must remove another stem(branch) do the following. Lay it on a flat board and with a very sharp, pointed knife cut down along the stem from top to bottom so that it is in two sections and you can study the center core looking for a blackish discoloration rather than the healthy greenish/yellow color you would expect. The unwanted black color indicates Verticillium wilt. This is the quick method to identify VW.

Unfortunately, that blackened discoloration of the pith - or the streaking of the cambium for that matter - is not always present in cases of Verticillium wilt.

I had installed all new landscaping and have watered somewhat frequently.

==>>> how do you water .. lawn irrigation .. is usually not sufficient for newly planted large plants .. you need to insure you are getting water down into the root mass .. not just the first inch.. like a lawn likes ...

dig some small holes with a hand trowel or tablespoon.. AND FIND OUT about water at depth ... down where the roots are .. both in the gob planted.. and native soil ...

and then water accordingly ...

i would hope you were sold 'clean' stock ... i would expect that Ag inspectors would be on the look out for such things as VW ... and i would not expect it to appear.. within 6 weeks of purchase ... so i would presume its not getting enough water ...

and the mildew is classic overhead watering at night in the heat of summer when the leaves stay damp all night long.. hence the question about how they are watered ...

in other words.. you jumped out to an extreme diagniosis ... before you have verified the primary needs of the plant ... so lets start with wateing...

btw.. the plants are still in transplant stress/shock... they are not hungry ... fert is not a response to any of this ...

No way is that verticillium. If that were in my garden I would suspect not enough water. They can take full sun and thrive in it, but that one just looks stressed. Keep it watered and don't worry about it. If you want to put an umbrella or the like over it that might help it a bit but those leaves aren't going to look any better. Once this plant takes hold it is virtually impossible to kill, so just have some patience!
