Electric floor heating in basements
Comments (1)A specific answer for your specific situation may be elusive. Given that snow melting electric cables are available for burying in outdoor pavement, it is definitely technically feasible. Using conventional radiant floor mats could be another matter. Why not contact some of the manufacturers of such mats? All the possible variables are too much for me to type here. My bathroom floor heat has GFCI built into the thermostat. If you choose not to get advice from the manufacturers or if you get the impression that they are afraid to offer advice, the option exists to install the mats you choose in your basement, being sure to use GFCI protection. If it works, fine. If the GFCI trips out and will not stay in the reset position, then you have an unheated tile floor....See Moreelectric fireplace in large basement room
Comments (4)Actually, he did say most electric fireplaces are between 3000 and 5000 btu's - but the more I read about it, the more I realize that electric isn't efficient for a big room, so I'll probably go with gas (20 000btu's - overkill, but should keep room toasty :) Now I just have to figure out how much it will cost to vent it straight up from the basement (I think the extra long "chimney" will cost more). The fireplace is in the centre of the basement, so I'm not sure the best way to vent to the outside would be - straight up or up and out the side....See MoreBasement Heat
Comments (5)I would suggest a Rinnai Energysaver. Probably an EX22 or EX 38. It is a direct vent unit with modulating gas valve and blower. Programmable t-stat is built in. Cool to the touch and QUIET! There are vent extensions available to bet the vent to the outside. I ran one in my basement for 10 yrs. Mine was not a finished basement but many times I would turn it on Fri evening in preparation to spending the weekend in my basement shop. What I found was that like yours I did not have an insulated first floor. The Rinnai would heat the floor and it actually would change the comfort on the first floor due to the basement heat heating the first floor. I have heated my homes with these units since 1991. They are excellent?...See MoreInstalling electric floor heat in basement bath
Comments (1)I've used Warmly Yours in my foyer and a down stairs bathroom. It works well. I used hot glue to tack the mat to the floor. Then skimmed a light coat of thin set. The next day, I used unmodified thin set and put Ditra over the Warmly Yours mat. I would use Dirta because it's an anti-fracture membrane....See Moreaspiringdiyer
